THE FAINT

The Beginning

It was inevitable

The Faint is an indie rock/synth rock band. Formed in Omaha, Nebraska, the first incarnation of The Faint was known was Norman Bailer, a reference to Norman Mailer. The band Norman Bailer also included Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes, with whom The Faint toured in 2005. He left shortly after joining and wasn't accepted into the band when he attempted to return. He therefore played no part in The Faint's current sound, though they formerly shared a spot with Bright Eyes on Saddle Creek Records.

Media and Blank-Wave Arcade

The band originally consisted of Clark Baechle, Todd Fink (formerly Todd Baechle), and Joel Petersen. They signed to Saddle Creek Records and released a few singles, but were unable to establish widespread sales, though they were extremely popular in the Omaha-area. After adding Matt Bowen, The Faint released Media, which established them within a small, national community of fans.

While touring, Bowen left and was replaced by Jacob Thiele who helped move the next album, Blank-Wave Arcade, towards a more dance and techno influenced sound. The album was an underground hit.

Danse Macabre and Wet From Birth

Partway through the creation of the morose Danse Macabre, The Faint added Dapose, a death metal guitarist formerly of LEAD. Danse Macabre was also a critical and commercial success and has helped to establish a wider fanbase for the band.

Their latest album, released in 2004, is called Wet from Birth. On December 12, 2005, The Faint announced that they have moved out of The Orifice (a rented out warehouse they used to record Wet from Birth) and into a new space which has been named ENAMEL.

Fasciinatiion

The next album

Rumors circulated the internet that The Faint would be leaving Saddle Creek before their next album, to join up with American Recordings and producer Rick Rubin. As it turns out, the band has left Saddle Creek, but to form their own label called blank.wav (which I have to say is a genius name).

At last notice, the band is in the process of recording their next album, which will be titled Fasciinatiion. It's apparently set for release on August 5th.

The Faint has debuted a track from the new album, The Geeks Were Right, on the band's official MySpace page. Go listen!

The albums!

Media

The album before the addition of Jacob Thiele and Dapose. Possibly described as a stripped-down version of the band, this album still delivers solid indie rock entertainment.

Amazon Price: $12.98 (as of 10/12/2008)
Used Price: $4.24

Blank-wave Arcade

This is where the new wave influence comes in, after the addition of Jacob Thiele on keyboard. Heavily synthesized, new wave influenced, my favorite.

Amazon Price: $12.98 (as of 10/12/2008)
Used Price: $5.75

Danse Macabre

Like a darker version of BWA, Danse Macabre rolls in to tell about the flaws of modern society with vignettes and concepts laid over pulsing synth.

Amazon Price: $11.98 (as of 10/12/2008)
Used Price: $3.50

Danse Macabre Remixes

The remix album to Danse Macabre. Features Jagz Kooner, The Calculators, and more.

Amazon Price: $17.98 (as of 10/12/2008)
Used Price: $2.98

Wet from Birth

The Faint's latest release. Somewhat eschews high pitched synth for more concentration on solid bass lines. Possibly the band's lightest album, but still excellent.

Amazon Price: $11.98 (as of 10/12/2008)
Used Price: $3.95
