Antique & Vintage Textiles

Textiles in all eras were in part, "a labor of love". Some of course being about sheer necessity. I look with admiration of the beauty & precise handiwork ladies of yesteryear stored away in cupboards, chests etc. only to be discovered again...

Antique & Vintage Children's Clothing - Great Finds From The Gatherings

Antique & Vintage Children's Clothing 1850-1930

Children's clothing from the Victorian to 1930's are my specialty. Clothing for baby to young teen - boys & girls. Simple cottons, solid & calico print fabrics to fancy silks and satins. Often times children's clothing was handed down from a older child to a younger. In many instances several times over until the garment was used up and worn out. This is especially true in families with little financial means. Buying simple cottons in all eras one may need to be flexible with condition and accept pieces in less than perfect condition. Pieces of baby clothing on the other hand, such as Christening gowns even though worn by more than one child were special. Worn only once or a few times by other children these gowns can be found in remarkably good condition if stored properly. Silk & satin children's clothing were usually special and worn on occasion. However, clothing of this type of fabrics sometimes did not wear well with it being subject to breaks & shreds of the cloth. Please visit my store www.the-gatherings-antique-vintage.com

Collections

Neat items to collect

Building a collection no matter of the age of the object/s we seek is both fun and rewarding. Sometimes a collection occurs by happenstance and other times we start out actively looking for that item of choice. Regardless of how we start it is the good time we have along the way. In many instances social ties and friendships are formed from the common bond of our collections.

The photos below offer a sampling of collections that could be put together. From the patriotic drum with Victorian children on parade to the Steiff teddy bear ready to beat out a "flag waving" tune. Or the patriotic lithograph pillow cover that is a nice addition to a collection. If you love to decorate in the "country" style early painted furniture and smalls are a must. A country setting would not be complete without early homespuns & calico textiles. The two just seem to go together.

If holiday items are your forte there are many wonderful items in all eras to assemble into a impressive collection such as the feather Christmas trees from antique to vintage or Christmas tree ornaments. Spun cotton ornaments were a favorite.

Personally, I have a love of early sewing items especially in cloth. The array is quite endless as many items are handmade one of a kind from pincushions to emeries to roll ups. The list could go on....

Even a collection of old wooden thread spools with the paper labels of many companies on the end of the spools provide an interesting collection. Team it with balls of crochet thread, embroidery floss with original labels mixed in with old knitting needles, embroidery hoops etc. heaped in an old container (sewing basket, wire basket or ? ) will provide a conversation piece.

Those endearing school girl ABC samplers from very early to later Victorian are always sought after. Of course, the dated & sign ones especially with family history are always in demand. although the prices of these treasures are always escalating.

A whole world of china, pottery & glassware are out there for collecting. So much to choose from and so many time frames available. One of mine is white ironstone - so very popular today. Many white ironstone pieces display a simplicity design so in tune with today's decorating style. I once viewed a collection of white pitchers from small to large from creamers, milk pitchers to wash stand pitchers. What an impressive collection of all sizes and shapes artfully put together.

Victorians also loved the game of carpet ball. These 19th C balls are a glazed fired clay in numerous designs & colors. Usually about 4" diameter & quite heavy, too. This game properly called "carpet bowl" was an indoor parlor game of bowling. A few of these balls "collected" together can make a rather interesting topic of conversation.

I do have many collecting loves and if you have a love of early textiles what better choice than to choose a collection of early doll clothing. I personally favor the calicos from the 19th C, however, all era of doll clothes can make a decorating statement. If you have a country home a peg rack would be suitable for displaying these small pieces or hang on a cupboard knob such as I have shown in the photo. Add a doll or two and what little girl wouldn't like to play. Looking for early doll clothes? Please visit my store The Gatherings

Early 1900's Child's Lithograph Tin Dish Set

Mary Had a Little Lamb

Another collecting passion from days gone by are children's play things. So much to choose from and so many eras to collect from. The history of children's toys is quite fascinating and the manufacturing companies quite varied. Many were cottage industries small in scope but nevertheless produced beautiful wares. Some of the finer toys were produced in Germany.

One of my favorite "pretend toys" is this child's lithograph tin play set consisting of tray and two cups & saucers. Just perfect for afternoon tea. The motif definitely suggest the name of "Mary Had A Little Lamb". Indeed, many tin sets were inspired by nursery rhymes, comic or movie characters. Although this set does not have a manufacture name, Ohio Art Co. & Chein Co. were two companies

Edwardian Ribbon Art & Fine Embroidery

Milady's Peacock Embroidery & Ribbon Art Purse

Some of the most beautiful handmade ribbon art combined with fine embroidery proliferated through the early years of the Edwardian era. Many of these handmade items were of printed moire or water silk ribbons in floras, stripes & assorted weaves. Still others were of beautiful fashionable solid colors of the day. Some ribbons were finely embroidered & then sewn into fanciful pincushions, needlecases, bags & other imaginable creations. Photographed is a very lovely Edwardian purse of irridescent taffeta with finely embroidered peacock definitely showing the skill of the needle worker. Gold metallic braid purse handles & tassels give the finishing touch to this highly desireable purse.

Victorian Fanciwork Ribbon Art Sewing Articles

Additional Photos of Victorian Ribbon Art

I do fancy these incredible delectable ribbon art ladies from the Victorian and early Edwardian era fashioned with needle and thread from bits of ribbon, embroidery floss, lace and other embellishments. Many instructions were available in needlework magazines & pattern books of the day. Some patterns were quite elaborate & took some skill to create with others more simple. However, I am also quite certain many fashioned these creations from their own imagination. Many of these treasures were given as gifts and how special to receive a present created by a loved one or friend. Often, I have found these ribbon art pieces still neatly tucked in a box sometimes with a note from the giver.

The two items in the photos are sewing / or vanity articles. The first is a strawberry pincushion and the second a pin keep for storing pins. Both are handmade of water taffeta printed silk ribbon. Both items can be seen & purchased in my Ebay store "The Gatherings" www.the-gatherings-antique-vintage.com

Although both of these lovely pieces have now been sold do not hesitate to stop by to see other ribbon art offerings including a silk ribbon "Christmas" needlecase.

Victorian / Edwardian Ribbon Art Hanky Box / Keeper

A dainty Little Box For Storing Hankies

Another of those wonderous sewing examples of fine Ribbon Art from the early years of the 1900's. This fold over top hanky box was created from cardboard covered in silk plaid & solid ribbon, fashioned & puffed into a small square box to hold milady's hankies. This item can be seen & purchased in my Ebay store "The Gatherings" www.the-gatherings-antique-vintage.com

Ribbon Art ~ A Victorian Treasure

More Delectable Ribbon Art

A few more treasures of that delectable ribbon art from the Victorian - early 1900's era. Each of these pieces are hand made.

Although hanky cases from this era abound each tend to be different. Some are silks and satins covered with lace accented with bows, ribbon rosettes or other lace. Others are made in the shape of a box as the satin plaid one above. Again, there is always something very exceptional such as the lovely case with the handpainted birds on the cover. Ah...always to remind one of spring.

In the sewing department is the sweet red ribbon pincushion accented with silk embroidery. Each side embroidered a bit different. Pincushions seem to be one of the items that caught the imagination of the needle worker. Truly a wonderful collection could be assembled of just ribbon art pincushions.

The last in this little group is a spool thread holder. This is a little more unusual find and again, completely handmade although may have been made from a pattern. I am sure this lovely piece was given as a gift.
