Grand Theft Auto IV

I originally thought of creating a GTA4 debate when the game came out, but I thought 'What do I actually know about the game apart from my previous experience of Grand Theft Auto games and what I read about it'. How could I claim to be an expert on the game if I had never played it? So now after playing the game and completing 88% of it I now know what I am talking about and can claim to be somewhat of an expert on the subject.

Grand Theft Auto 4 is so huge that just one debate will not even scratch the surface of it, so here is The GREAT Grand Theft Auto 4 Debate and I will try and cover as many debates and polls as possible to do the game justice. So here goes:

Please note that this is a G Rated article

Game Certification - Part 1

Grand Theft Auto 4 has an 18 certificate in Great Britain and the minimum of a Mature certificate in the rest of the world, but how many people actually pay attention to game (or even film) certification? To highlight the point, recently I watched the Mary Whitehouse story on BBC which was followed by a news program about the effect that Mary Whitehouse had on television. The progam went on to ask whether violent games actually made people violent and they asked a school kid who was no older than 14 that question. To which he replied 'No, games don't make me voilent but one of my friends who is playing GTA4 is now swearing a lot more!'. I immediately thought, Whoa! How come a kid of 14 is playing an 18 certificate game and how is it the games fault that a minor who shouldn't be playing the game is swearing more than normal? So the first question now becomes:

Do you pay attention to game/film certification?

No I don't really.

... says:

Im 15 and I've been playing them for years. It doesn't make me think or act in any way, I just find them fun to play...

plecostomus says:

I don't have children and I'm an adult, so also nope.

Daniel says:

im an adult so no

Game Certification - Part 2

My second story on game/film certification comes from the time that Starship Troopers was released on video. At that time I worked in a video rental shop where people could reserve films. One person who had reserved the film came in with his 15 year old son, paid the video rental and as he walked out of the store he handed the video to his son. It was plainly obvious that he had rented it for his son and he had no intention of watching the film himself. I had followed the law and not rented it to a minor but it seems that some parents don't care about the law.

There should be a way that the law can clamp down on this sort of behaviour, but should they? What is the point in certification if all that people do is ignore it?

Should the law clamp down more on game/film certification?

Chance says:

... is Right the parents should have the choice.

... says:

The parents should have the choice.

plecostomus says:

No way. That interferes on the parents' freedom to raise their children as they like. The government SHOULD NOT be playing nanny to full-grown adults. It's the parents' decision whether or not their children have access to these games. In fact if you look at a lot of the legislation (though I refer to the US, not the UK), many attempts at clamping down on games are hard to support because they're bringing the government into YOUR child-rearing decisions.

All children are different in terms of maturity, and there is no "one-size-fits-all" mandatory law that should be applied to what movies/games/other media their parents authorize them to view.

No thanks.

Game Certification - Part 3

Do you think games make people more violent?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes

No

Chance says:

No.Some studies show that violent video games CAN make you more violent, BUT most people aren't affected.

... says:

No.

Avare says:

I don't think so..

plecostomus says:

No. If people were that impressionable they would be running outside and smashing pedestrians with their car after playing GTA IV. There are at least two studies I can think of off the top of my head that say video games REDUCE violent tendencies.

Video game players are invited to release stress and aggression on completely imaginary items, which I find preferable to them doing so on real objects. This "video games make people more violent" argument reminds me of the ones leveled against rock music and anything else progressive in media. Instead of pretending that people are never stressed and should have NO outlets easily available to release that stress, I say we should acknowledge the calming effect video games can have for many players.

GTA IV on Amazon

For any of you who still do not own this amazing game get it now from Amazon at less than high street prices.

Actors Royalties?

Being a user of Digg people send me shouts on articles to digg (as all digg users get). Two of the articles were on the GTA4 game actors complaining that the game has sold over $600 Million worth and that they haven't seen any royalties or residuals. Who actually plays games because of the actors anyway? Have these people the right to moan about royalties?

Here are the two links so that you can see for yourself:

Voice Of Niko Bellic Not Happy With His Pay
GTA IV's Roman is Looking for Work

Should game actors get royalties/residuals?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes

Chance says:

They should if they did a great job on making the game.zoomlens

Avare says:

Of course!

No

Drufus says:

If these moaning actors had been offered the job but the payment was on royalties only they would never have taken the job in the first place. I say they should shut their yap and be thankful they got paid what they got.

Sex and Violence

Whilst GTA IV has an 18 certificate for all the crime and violence it portrays the sex content is only really a PG13. When Niko Belic takes one of his dates home and accompanies them inside the cut scene does no more than portray that he goes in for a brew and a snog. And the strip clubs are even more of a joke. If you went into a strip club in real life and none of the strippers took ALL of their clothes off you would be asking for a refund.

I am not asking for XXX porn here, but one thing is really obvious here; the games designers know damn well that minors are going to play this game and they have toned it down because of that. My gripe here though is that if you get an 18 certificate item you do not expect to get PG13 rated content. Am I wrong?

Is the sexual content of GTA4 at an exceptable level?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes

Chance says:

Yes.

plecostomus says:

The designers were probably concerned about their game being viewed as porn regardless of whether or not children are involved.

No

DD Cupper says:

I expected to at least see some naked boobies bouncing around in this game tbh. The game Conan had semi-naked babes in it and it didn't make it a pornographic game.

jprice says:

I think they should release some quality adult games... Most gamers now are older then 18!

Avare says:

No.

Your Favourite Character

Here is a more open ended question. Which of all the games characters are your favourite? You can pick any character in the game, it could be Niko Belic, or his cousin Roman. Maybe its Kiki Jenkins the lawchick, or even the psycho random character Eddie Low. It might even be the charismatic Brucie or the hard to understand Little Jacob.

The choice is yours, tell me which character you like the best and why or just use the poll below.

Those Damn Birds!

The hardest aspect of the game in my opinion is the killing of all the pigeons. Whilst the killing is easy enough the finding of them is damn hard. I reckon the only way to kill them all is to either use the game solution book, or to print out all the maps from the hidden ingame website (the url of which is revealed to you by email once you have completed the story missions).

Grand Theft Auto IV Signature Series Guide (Bradygames Signature)

Amazon Price: $13.59 (as of 07/06/2009)Buy Now

If you are serious about finding all the pigeons in Grand Theft Auto IV then I suggest you buy this book. Not only does it give you the location of all the 200 pigeons it also shows you the screenshots of their EXACT location. It also does the same for all the stunt jumps.

For the episode missions though I suggest you work them out yourself because if you really think about some of the missions they are so easy if you combine your friends special abilities with them (especially Lawchick's).

What is missing from GTA IV?

I for one have played most of the GTA series (yes, I have even played the very first GTA) and enjoyed some of the things that are missing from the latest of this great series. I miss the riding of the mountain bike, the parachuting, the flying of the airplanes, the mass destruction you can do with a tank and even the endless taxi missions.

What if anything is your favourite missing content in GTA IV? It doesn't have to have been featured in any of the other Grand Theft Auto games. Fire away and be as creative as possible.
