The Hulk First Appeared as the Incredible Hulk #1 (1962). The storyline was as follows:

In a secret, remote testing facility somewhere in New Mexico, the United States Department of Defense was experimenting with nuclear radiation. Heading up this experiment was a young nuclear physicist Dr. Robert Bruce Banner.

During the test trials of this gamma bomb, Banner selflessly rushes to the rescue of wondering teenager who had mistakenly walked onto the testing field. As the countdown moved toward zero, Dr. Banner shoves the youngster to safety, but is himself struck full-force by the bomb blast. Miraculously Bruce Banner survives. However, unbeknown to him and the others he was irradiated by deadly gamma energy.

The journey of this character were many and varied. Initially, Banner would transform into the Hulk only at sunset and return to his human self at dawn. However, after awhile his changes into the green Hulk were triggered by the adrenaline that would be released whenever he reached an intense state of agitation no matter what time it was. The green Hulk had little of Bruce Banner's memory or intelligence, and was easily outraged; thus making him a threat to society.

Also, ever since his transformation into the Hulk, the military, under the command of General Thaddeus Ross had continually hunted him down.

For a very brief time Banner was successful at treating his condition and was able to control himself even when transformed into the Hulk. As a result he helped form the Avengers and was thus granted a presidential pardon. However, after a while Banner reverted into the green monster that was becoming a menace to society, and again General Thaddeus Ross resumed to hunt him down.

So was the life of this character. Bruce Banner went through various stages in the development of the Hulk character and fought many awesome foes. For a short while the Hulk character regained some of Banner's intelligence and living in Las Vegas under the assumed name of Mr. Fixit, or "Joe Fixit", he worked as a muscle man for the mob.

In another storyline, a self controlled Hulk was tricked by Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. into defeating a space weapon called the Godseye which could simultaneously activate the world's nuclear bombs. The Hulk, soon discovered that the Godseye was actually a rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. weapon and after destroying it he was caught by a group of superheroes known as the Illuminati, who were set on getting rid of him. On their voyage to a planet with no intelligent life forms there was a navigation malfunction and the was downed on a Planet Sakaar. This planet consisted of barbarian tribes, and gladiator battles and was ruled over by a corrupt empire.

The Hulk was captured and sold into slavery. He was then sent to the Great Arena to die in the battle games.

The Hulk overcame his challenge and was about to be pardoned by the Red King. Instead the Hulk chose to attack the Red King but was knocked unconscious instead when he became distracted. The Hulk joined several others and became war bound. This team of misfits would overcome all challenges set before them and became known throughout the planet as great warriors. Shortly thereafter, the people rebelled against the Red King.

The misfits were forced to fight the Silver Surfer, a former member of thier group. The Hulk, was enraged by the Silver Surfer's betrayal, and attacked him fiercely inadvertently releasing him from the disc embedded within him. Freed of the implant that had kept him prisoner, the Surfer destroyed the rest of the implant discs embedded in the other warriors. However, the Hulk declined the Silver Surfer's offer of transportation back to Planet Sakaar to finish things off heading back to earth instead.
