The Isle of Jura: Where the Red Deer Outnumber the Humans Thirty to One!

The population of Jura in human terms is only about two hundred - not a lot for an island of more than two hundred square miles! There are, however, an estimated five or six thousand red deer in residence...

The name, Jura, is most commonly believed to be derived from a Norse word, translating into English as, "Island of Deer."

Getting to Jura

There are no flights to this island!

Islay May 2008 030Jura is reached from the neighbouring Isle of Islay, courtesy of a short, five minute ferry journey across the Sound of Islay. The journey affords one a magnificent view of the Paps of Jura, the trio of hills which dominate the island's landscape. Beware, however, that it can be a rough crossing during inclement weather conditions as the currents which affect this narrow sea channel are extremely strong at the best of times.

Click here for details of how to reach Islay, either by sea or by air.

The Village of Craighouse, Jura

The main settlement on the island

Craighouse, JuraCraighouse is not only the population centre of Jura but the place where you will find the only hotel on the island, "The Jura Hotel." It is also where you will find Jura's distillery.

I must admit that when I first entered Craighouse, I had a little difficulty in believing that I was still in Scotland! I was fortunate in that it was a beautiful day and the sheltered bay and palm trees almost had me believing that I was somewhere in the South of France.

A wealth of locations and opportunities for "tight lines"

Islay May 2008 084There are more than two hundred lochs (Scottish word for lake) on the Isle of Jura, a great many of which are capable of providing the game fisherman with fantastic sport fishing for wild brown trout. Be warned, however, that a permit must be obtained beforehand from the relevant licencing authority. George Orwell on Jura

Where he penned, in seclusion, his prophetic novel, "1984"

It was while living on the island of Jura that George Orwell penned his classic novel, "1984." He first moved to the island in 1945, around the time at which he published, "Animal Farm," but ill-health forced him to leave shortly before his death in 1950.

Do You Like Venison?

Try this delicious recipe...

Venison CasseroleVenison has an extremely distinctive, delicate and unmistakable flavour. The meat is extremely tender (if cooked properly) and has a texture like what I can only describe as a cross between steak and liver! This is a photograph of a recipe which I came up with some time ago, including venison, onions, mushrooms and red wine. The list of ingredients and preparation method can be found in full by clicking here.
