The Last Waltz - Final Concert of The Band
Thanksgiving Day 1976 at Winterland in San Francisco the rock group known simply as The Band called it a day after 16 years on the road. The concert was filmed by Martin Scorcese and the resulting movie is The Last Waltz. Arguably the best concert movie of all time.
Their career together took them from Ronnie Hawkins backup band, to playing on their own at Woodstock to longtime collaboration with Bob Dylan.
For a group that many still are unaware of, their critical acclaim was only surpassed by the respect that other musicians held for them. This was evident by the quality of folks that showed up in the city by the bay to help them put it to bed.
For my money this is the only mega concert that matters. Everything else is just an imitation. The LiveAids, FarmAids and all the rest can only wish their soundtracks had the gems found on each and every track of The Last Waltz.
Admittedly, my musical tastes are heavily represented by the people singing and playing here, so I am not exactly unbiased...
Even now, almost 30 years later, it all still holds up. Watch the videos and tell me I'm wrong!
Enjoy!

Don't Do It - The Band - The Last Waltz
The best part of this track for me is the Levon Helm & Rick Danko vocal work. The energy of this is incredible. Even though this was really an encore it opens the movie.

Tura Lura Lura - Van Morrison With The Band
The Last Waltz
I can't tell you how excited I was to come across even the audio to this cut.
Van Morrison is THE man with THE voice for this song. Listen and be amazed...

Dry Your Eyes - Neil Diamond & The Band - The Last Waltz
Not being a big Neil Diamond fan, I was pleasantly surprised at how moving this song is. The more I listen to and watch The Last Waltz the more I find these hidden gems like Dry Your Eyes.

It Makes No Difference - The Band - The Last Waltz
A couple of years ago It Makes No Difference was covered by My Morning Jacket for a CD Tribute to The Band. They kept both the arrangement and instrumentation found in this version, and absolutely nailed the spirit of the song. One of my all time favorites by The Band.

It Makes No Difference - Covered By My Morning Jacket
My Morning Jacket covered this song for Endless Highway - The Music Of The Band.
Listen closely and I think you'll agree that they stayed true to the arrangement used on The Last Waltz but brought a unique energy to it as well. Worth several listens to me...

- The Last Waltz is a fantastic movie. I love the 2008 movie Martin Scorsese did with the Rolling Stones--Shine A Light. The digital photography is amazing!
