My Review

Although this is the second book in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, it was the very first Discworld book I read. With hysterical characters like Rincewind the inept, but endearing wizard, Twoflower the tourist, and my very favorite - The Luggage, I was hooked from the start and am now an avid Terry Pratchett fan!

This book is the only book in the Discworld series that follows directly from the book before it (The Color of Magic). It starts out right after the wizard Rincewind and his fellow traveler, Twoflower, fall from the edge of the Discworld, but are ultimately saved by the Octavo magic book which previously hid a magic spell in Rincewind's head (yes, a book can do that).

Meanwhile, the wizards of Unseen University discover that the Discworld will soon be destroyed unless the eight spells of the Octavo are read: the most powerful spells in existence, including the one which hides in Rincewind's head. Consequently, several orders of wizards try to capture Rincewind, led by Trymon, a former classmate of Rincewind's, who wishes to obtain the power of the spells for himself.

After Rincewind, who has met again with Twoflower, escapes them, it becomes apparent that Great A'Tuin, the giant turtle that carries the Discworld, has set a new course that leads it directly into a red star with eight moons. Rincewind and Twoflower are accompanied by Cohen the Barbarian, a toothless, aging hero, and Bethan, a sacrificial virgin saved by Cohen, with assistance from Rincewind and Twoflower.

Terry Pratchett on Wikipedia

Terence David John Pratchett, OBE (born 28 April 1948) is an English fantasy, science fiction, and children's author. He is best known for his popular and long-running Discworld series of comic fantasy novels. Pratchett's first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971, and since his first Discworld novel (The Colour of Magic) was published in 1983, he has written two books a year on average. Pratchett is also known for close collaboration on adaptations of his books but has held back from Discworld feature films so far.

Pratchett was the UK's best-selling author of the 1990s,

and as of December 2007 has sold more than 55 million books worldwide,

with translations made in 33 languages.

He is currently the second most-read writer in the UK, and seventh most-read non-US author in the US

In 2001 he won the Carnegie Medal for his children's novel The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

Despite his popularity, Pratchett is often described as having a ?cult following' - a factor seen as having, in the past, hindered his literary recognition.

Pratchett was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire "for services to literature" in 1998. In December 2007, Pratchett publicly announced that he was suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's disease, subsequently making a substantial public donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust.

Terry Pratchett tells a dirty joke

During his appearance at a theatre in Berlin, promoting his new book Thud!, famous comic fantasy writer Terry Pratchett tells a dirty joke. Sorry for the lack of steadiness there, it was shot using 12x zoom and without anything to rest my arms on. That excuse enough? ;) Transcript following. PLEASE DO NOT READ ON IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE PUNCHLINE FOR YOURSELF! ----------- [...] but it should not affect [minors etc.]. I like the pure mathematics of the joke. A man goes into a pub, carrying an alligator under one arm. Puts it down on the table. And he says:"I've got a trick. I bet there's no one here who is prepared to do this." He opens the alligator's mouth and..well...um.. reveals a certain part of his own...anatomy, which he places therein. And then he brings down his hand on the alligator's head, like this BAMM! He blinks a little while and then he says: "Is there anyone here prepared to do that?" There's a long pause, and then an old lady at the back of the pub gets up and says: "I don't mind giving it a try but you mustn't hit me so hard on the head."
