The Liverpool Scene

The Liverpool Scene was a poetry band which included Adrian Henri, Andy Roberts, Mike Evans, Mike Hart, Percy Jones and Brian Dodson. It grew out of the success of The Incredible New Liverpool Scene. Their first LP featured Henri and Roger McGough reading their work. John Peel, who was then working on the pirate Radio London, picked up on the LP and featured it on his Perfumed Garden show. After Radio London closed down, Peel visited Liverpool and met the band. They were featured in session on his Top Gear and Night Ride shows, and in 1968 he produced their first LP. Four LPs were issued with Henri's poetry heavily featured. Despite Peel's support the albums achieved little success, although the band did become popular on the UK university and college circuit, including a 1969 tour supporting Led Zeppelin.

The Players

During the summer of love 1967 the nucleus of Liverpool Scene was Mike Evans (tenor and alto sax, guitar, vocals - formerly with the Clayton Squares), Mike Hart (guitar, vocals, 1968), Adrian Henry (vocals), who gave lessons at an art school, Brian Patten ( voc) and Andy Roberts (guitar, vocals, accordion, harmonica, penny whistle).
They lived just above O'Connor's Tavern, where they held their regular Tuesday-sessions. After an increasing importance of they were joined by Percy Jones (bass, harmonica) and Brian Dodson (drums, 1967-69) and later Pete Clark (drums, 1969-70) and then Frank Garrett (drums, 1970)

"The Scene was the conscious center of the human universe" - Gingsberg

The beginning! An album of poetry with Roger McGough, Adrian Henri and Andy Roberts. Brian Patten didnt make it to the album...

The Liverpool Scene was the title of a poetry book in 1967, published in London and bringing to the public the works of Roger McGough, Adrian Henry and Andy Roberts.
These three poets had gathered a growing following in the early 60's by often reading their poems in places like Steates Coffee Bar, O'Connors' Tavern and the Everyman Theatre. When the nation got aware of the existence of Liverpool (by way of the Beatles) these poets started to sell their books in growing piles, especially since the aformentioned book was released with an LP. Allen Ginsberg had said, the Scene was the conscious center of the human universe.
The record became the link to pop. Much of this new poetry was influenced by popsongs and therefore it was a logical step, when the poets joined the musicians.
The first to do this was Roger McGough along with Scaffold. Next step was a penguin book (The Mersey Sound) featuring Henri, McGough and Patten. Roger McGough saw it this way:The kids didn't see this poetry with a capital p, they understood it as modern entertainment, as part of the pop-movement.

Amazing Adventures of...

The cover shows the regulars outside O'Conners Tavern in Liverpool, the band's home venue.

Liverpool DJ John Peel, who was then working on the pirate radio station Radio London, picked up on the LP and featured it on his influential late-night Perfumed Garden show. After Radio London closed down, Peel visited Liverpool and met the band; as a consequence, they were featured in session on his BBC Top Gear and Night Ride shows, and in 1968 he produced their first LP Amazing Adventures of... The Liverpool Scene.

"O'Conners is still there. Basically it was the creature of its landlord, Jimmy Moore, (the big fella on the cover). A pretty utilitarian drinking hole, but large, with a good sized upstairs room which we took over for poetry and music sessions on Wednesdays. The downstairs was lit with orange bulbs, lending a curious ambience to the experience." ANDY ROBERTS

Bath Festival of Blues Poster

The Bath Festival of Blues circa 1969

Stuart Godfrey recollects. I remember very clearly seeing Liverpool Scene at the Bath Festival in 1969 and they were BRILLIANT - even in the exalted company of Led Zeppelin, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Harper, The Nice (to name but a few) they really got the festival buzzing - Adrian Henri was an amazing front-man who very nearly wrecked the stage with some ill-advised leaps (he was a big guy). Less clearly I seem to recall they had a guitarist name of Andy Roberts??? who made some pretty strong solo albums.
I did get to meet Adrian Henri and Roger McCough at a poetry reading in Hereford and they were really nice guys; Henri had this uncanny ability of balancing one full beer-mug on his belly while downing another. As a thin guy, I found this very impressive. Ah, memories...Stuart
