About the Bridge

The small Canadian town of Hartland, New Brunswick, is about an hour's drive from my hometown of Johnville.  This town hosts a marvel in tourism: the longest covered bridge in the world.

Whenever I visit, I am often stuck with the thought that there apears to be more tourists in the town than permanent residents.  In this lens, I will provide links about the bridge as well as some photos.

The Hartland Bridge on Wikipedia

The Hartland Bridge in Hartland, New Brunswick, is the world's longest covered bridge.

The bridge, 1,282 feet (390 metres) long, crosses the Saint John River from Hartland to Somerville. It was constructed in 1901 by the Hartland Bridge Company, and was purchased by the provincial government in 1906. The bridge was not originally built covered.

In 1920, two spans of the bridge collapsed due to river ice. The bridge reopened in 1922 after construction to repair the structure, at which time the bridge was also covered, despite some local opposition.[http://www.town.hartland.nb.ca/html/bridge.htm]

A pedestrian walkway was added to the bridge in 1945. The bridge was declared a national historic site in 1980.

In 1982, the bridge was again closed for repairs after a car struck a steel beam, causing part of the bridge to drop. The bridge was reopened to traffic on February 10, 1983.

In the winter of 2007, the bridge was closed, due to the central beam splitting down the middle. Due to high water levels, the bridge will remain closed until the spring, when repairs may be affected.

A Clip

To illustrate the length of this bridge, I found this clip of two guys filming their drive across it. I do not know these guys. While driving across, one mentions an interesting point about the significance of covered bridges.

Kissing Bridges

Covered bridges are sometimes called kissing bridges. Years ago, kissing in public was taboo so couples would wait until they were inside a dark, covered bridge. Today, this is still carried on as a tradition.
