Movie about The Trojan War
This is the story about the fight between the Trojans and the Greeks, supposedly after Helen of Sparta left with Paris, one of the sons of Troy. It's a story of the most talked about fight between Achilles and Hector. Based on Homer's book The Iliad. Altho there's parts in it that are different the basics are still the same. Starring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger.
Altho it wasn't a big hit at the box office, I enjoyed it even with the little changes.
The Trojan War
A Brief Story on the Trojan War

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy stole Helen from her husband Menelaus, the king of Sparta. The war is among the most important events in Greek mythology and was narrated in many works of Greek literature, including the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer. "The Iliad" relates a part of the last year of the siege of Troy, while the Odyssey describes the journey home of Odysseus, one of the Achaean leaders. Other parts of the war were told in a cycle of epic poems, which has only survived in fragments. Episodes from the...
Myth, Legend or just a Movie??
what do you think about the Trojan War
I guess no one can actually say for sure whether Troy is based on fact or just a fairy tale since there's no one alive who actually witnessed it first hand. But who knows, maybe Hector and Achilles really do exist!! ;)
The Differences between Book and Movie
The Iliad verses Troy
In the movie it's stated that Agamemnon brought the kings together for this war, which really isn't true. Helen had many powerful suitors and her father was too afraid to pick one of them for her husband in fear of offending the others. Odysseus convinced him to make a contract with the other suitors that made them promise that should anything happen to Helen, the other kings would assist in getting her back. When Paris kidnapped her from Menelaus, they were bound to honor their promise and help to return her. When Paris was born, it was predicted that he would be the downfall of Troy, so he was sent into the mountains without any knowledge of who he really was. Aphrodite was the one who promised him the most beautiful woman in the world and started the Trojan War.
In the movie Patroclus is Achilles's cousin but in the book he is his lover. I'm glad they made the change in the movie tho, cause I just couldn't picture Brad Pitt with a male lover (not that there's anything wrong with that).
In the movie Briseis is a member of Priam's family which she actually wasn't. She was simply a slave girl that Achilles in fact did fall in love with and Agamemnon did steal from him. And she didn't kill Agamemnon like they said in the movie. Agamemnon actually made it back home where his wife and her lover murdered him.
Altho Hector was a great warrior in his time, after he killed Patroclus, he didn't actually come out to face Achilles as easily as the movie depicts it. Achilles chased him around the walls of Troy 3 times before he actually stopped to fight him. Hector never killed Menelaus either or Ajax. Ajax committed suicide after Odysseus was given Achilles armor over him.
Now I understand that a movie has only a couple of hours in it and there's alot to the Trojan War than time would permit in a movie so they have to condense in down. But this war took about 20 years to finish and not the few months or so that is depicted in the movie. And Helen helped in it's destruction along with Odysseus. All in all tho, I do like this movie and it is worth it to watch.

Myth, Legend or Baloney
So what do you think? Myth? Legend? Baloney? Would you believe the book or the movie is more correct?

Agamemnon
The Rest of the Lineup
other actors and actresses in the movie Troy that deserve mention
Besides Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom there was some other very fine actors in this movies as well.

Peter O'Toole - King Priam, also known for many many great movies. One that comes to mind is High Spirits with Darryl Hannah, Steve Guttenberg and Beverly D'Angelo. Hilarious movie. Others like The Scarlet Pumpernel and Lawerence of Arabia too.
Saffron Burrows - Andromache (Hector's Wife) Altho I don't believe she's all that well known, I do remember her from The Deep Blue Sea, about training sharks who got a little smarter then the humans. And In the Name of the Father with Daniel Day Lewis (wonder whatever happened to him...hmmm must find out)
Diane Kruger - Helen of Troy was considered to be the most beautiful woman of her time. Kruger on the other hand is probably best known for her role as Abigail Chase in National Treasure.
Brian Cox - Agamemnon - Later to play Ward Abbot in The Bourne Supremacy and Richard Morgan in The Ring. Altho he's played in at least 130 different movies, I don't recall him being "a main character".
Sean Bean - Odysseus - Probably best known for his role in The Lord of the Rings as Boromir or in The Partriot Games with Harrison Ford or as Lord Fenton in Scarlett (one my favs). As a side note tho about Odysseus it comes to light that, unknown to himself, he had married his own mother but I'll leave that to another story.
I have to say tho that of all the actors in this movie the only one that struck me as being a bad one was Garrett Hedlund who played Patroclus, maybe because he doesn't have enough "jobs" under his belt but he was just bad.
The Movie Troy
and you have to also watch the Odyssey
Don't forget to also watch Odyssey as well, it's about Odysseus' journey home from The Trojan War and all the troubles he ran into. And there's also Homer's, The Illiad. If you want, you can even delve further into the Greek Wars, look for their wars with Persia.

And how could you not want to take them both home and do some nasty things to them ......LOL...the actors that were picked for this movie was outstanding. They just seemed to fit the role they played.

- Very nice lens, 5***** I have been interested in Troy ever since I saw the Italian movie on The Wooden Horse from the 1950/60's when I was still in single digits.
Troy is real. Heinrich Schliemann (spelling?) searched for the city for years in the 1800's and finally found it. There is evidence of a great fire, in fact there were six cities built on top of each other, but one was destroyed by fire.
The more we learn about man's most ancient history, the more it has been found that the myths of old are often based on fact, or are in fact true. Whether it is episodes from Greece or Rome, or from the Old Testament, more and more is being proven every year.
I wrote a lens about Zecharia Sitchin, who has spent his life researching ancient tablets from Sumeria etc, and his translations of many ancient stories make everything start to fall into place in the ancient world. I firmly believe that the ancient gods and heroes really existed, as maybe did Atlantis and others.
