The Key to Ancient Egypt

Discovered near the town of Rosetta in 1799 by a soldier in Napoleon's army, the Rosetta Stone turned out to be the key to unlocking the lost language of the ancient Egyptians. The inscription on the Rosetta Stone is in three different scripts. The upper portion is in hieroglyphs, a language that no-one had been able to decypher. The center portion is in a script known as Demotic, which was also not understood at the time the Rosetta Stone was found. The bottom portion, however, was in Greek, a language that was well understood.

Realizing that these three scripts repeated the same proclaimation, Jean-Françios Champollion was able to unlock the mysteries of all inscriptions of ancient Egypt.

Within the Rosetta Stone Lies Another Key

The names of the people involved in the inscription solved the puzzle

Champollion's work on the Rosetta Stone followed up on previous work done by Thomas Young, who had translated much of the Demotic text. Champollion recognized the connection between the Demotic text and the Coptic language. Between the Greek inscription and Young's work on the Demotic, the text of the inscription was well understood.

The significant leap that Champollion was able to take due to his understanding of how Demotic and Coptic were related tied together the hieroglyphs and the name of King Ptolemy. He noted that some symbols were enclosed in a symbol called a cartouche and his realization that these cartouche symbols indicated a name helped him to further decode the hieroglyphs.

Rosetta Stone Controversy

Egypt asks for the return of the Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone is an artifact of the Egyptian history and culture, but for just over the last 200 years, it has been housed at the British Museum in London, England. In that time, the stone has moved only twice. Once it was evacuated during World War I, and then when it was loaned to the Louvre for one month during 1972.

The Egyptian government has asked the British Museum if it can borrow the stone for three months in 2012 to celebrate the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, being built near the Pyramids at Giza.

The British Museum have reasons why the stone would not be lent out, despite the history of having lent the stone to the Louvre. Have a look at many more details in this article on the formal request and then let the world know what you think here:

Your Name in Hieroglyphs

While some hieroglyphs stood for individual words, much like Chinese ideograms, many hieroglyphs are phonetic. The names of pharaohs were written using the phonetic glyphs enclosed in the cartouche symbol. Get your own name written in hieroglyphs in a cartouche pendant, or on a ring.
