The Secrets of Squidoo

Like a drop of rain that has joined a wandering river, we have been swept away by Squidoo, haven't we?

Do you know where you are going, or how you are going to get there?

Well let's face it Lensmasters, we have so much to learn. When you created you first lens, if you were like me you probably thought. Wow, that was really fun and really not that hard, maybe I will just make one more.

118 lenses later, I am still am searching for more information on how to make my existing lenses better. I crave more traffic to my lenses. I want them to be the best that they can be.

There are what I call "The Masters" of the Lensmasters that we can all learn from.

These are the people that have been around, probably made all the mistakes we are already making, once, twice, ten times. They have learned and grown with the knowledge they have gained through trial and error.

These are the people who truly care about Squidoo, and specialize in creating, marketing and promoting their lenses.

Let alone those that are "Squidoo".

Speaking of them, do you know who is responsible for this fantastic website we are all one huge family in? Well I didn't find out until today, on my search for knowledge.

You can read all about it on About Squidoo

On this lens, (which will be what I call a "living document" something I will continue to add to as I find more and more of those secret treasures) I am going to include all the information and links that have taken me so long to find. So that I can, and you can, have them to refer back to!

If you are just starting out learning how to make a lens, follow this link How to build your lens on Squidoo. It is a great lens with step by step directions to help you.

Bookmark this lens, You will use it over and over again!

You are beginning to see your "Vision" for your lenses, but it's a bit blurry

Secrets Codes for adding a little "Bling" to your lenses

I love bling!

We all love those new little discoveries of new "toys" as I call them, thought some may calls them "tools".

Those little tricks we use to brighten up a lens, to add a little pizazz!

Here are some great ideas from some of the best!

How to build a squidoo lens of your own and make money with it!
Including some basic html tips!I've noticed a need for guidance for some people that really have the desire to build a lens of their own, but really don't know where to start. Some have started but are not sure where they want to go with it.Or they may have an idea of where they want to go...
Squidoo CSS - my favorite code to spice up a lens

I've gathered my favorite Squidoo-code for later reference. I'm tired of trying to find that specific lens I used a css effect on and then having to go to edit-mode, copy paste, and then go back to the lens I was working on. This lens will help me be a better lensmaster.

Basic HTML for Squidoo
You can use basic HTML in a few of the lens modules. Mostly used to create hyperlinks (they are the "live links" to other sites). Though there are also other uses for HTML. If you find yourself in need of quick tutorial on how to do it, here it is!
Simple HTML tricks to use with Squidoo
Squidoo has a nice editor for your lenses, but things can be improved. This lens will show you some simple tricks to include more than possible with simply using the editor. These tricks should be used in modules like the link list, or the write module.
Advanced HTML for Squidoo
The techniques shown here aren't much more advanced then what's in the Basic HTML tutorial. The code being used isn't any more special. But the results and presentation can appear to be more sophisticated. Hence it being the Advanced HTML tutorial. For what it does for the look of your lens.
HTML Tips for Color

Color can be applied via HTML tags to fonts, borders and backgrounds.squidoo.com/basichtml and squidoo.com/advancedhtml show how to implement these colors. This lens however isn't going to show how the code is applied, but is a repository for the lists of colors in both the name...

Bulleted and Ordered Lists
You can easily make bulleted or numbered lists in the Text List module. Too easy! But if you want more control and more of a say on how the information is presented you'll need to learn to use three HTML tags.Lets say you want to display a list in the middle of a slab of information...
How to put a table of contents on your squidoo lens.
Well, I am going to help you through the process of creating a table of contents for you very own lenses. It is a pretty easy process once you have the basics down. This lens is not going to require a table of contents, but I recommend you check out my other lens to see an example.

The basic tools provided by Squidoo will do pretty much everything you need to get your content out to your audience. The Secrets of Squidoo
Like a drop of rain that has joined a wandering river, we have been swept away by Squidoo, haven't we?Do you know where you are going, or how you are going to get there?Well let's face it Lensmasters, we have so much to learn. When you created you first lens, if you were like me you probably thought

Secrets I have learned - Some tips for you!

These are just some tips I have learned over time while creating lenses. There are certain things I now know to do after I think I am finished with each lens;

  • In the introduction module, I always turn the "discovery tool" on. This allows Squidoo to share your lens on other lenses, and other lenses to be shared on yours.
  • In the introduction module, I add three links to lenses of mine that are relevant to the lens I have just built. So three of the six links on each lens, are links to lenses I have created. Which means more traffic.
  • Tags: Make sure they are relevant to your page. Put tags in that you think will guide people to your page. Things that they would type in for a search.

Note: There are some research indicating that not all websites are hitting on the tags at Squidoo. But I would still make sure they are present and relevant, as that could change.
  • Lensroll: lensroll your other lenses, and others lenses that are relevant to your page. The people that visit your page will most likely visit other pages that have similiar content.
  • Save your lens. (Back it up)

Squidoo is fantastic, but they are growing so very fast. On the right side of your page there is a link to "Export this lens". It saves it on your computer, and really takes just seconds to do. You put a lot of work into your lens and you don't want to loose it if Squidoo ever goes down!
  • Make sure your payment options are set for what you want them for. There are certain lenses that when created will change your default selection. It doesn't hurt to double check it. I set mine to the minimum payout of one dollar.
  • Take the time to not only publish your lens, but to look it over when you are done. Check your spelling, grammer and content for any mistakes.

Actually view the publish part of the lens, not your workshop. It will look a little bit different.
  • Go to Squidu and offer it for a critique. This is a great way to have fresh eyes, as well as experts look over your lens and offer suggestions on how it can be improved. But remember to go back to that post and read over those suggestions and utilize them to create the best lens ever.
  • Add your lens to social bookmarking links. If you have a lensography, don't forget to add your lenses there.
  • Lensroll it to your pages with like content.
  • Share it: Email it to family and friends. Take pride in your creation. You have spent a lot of time creating this lens and you should have a finished product that you can be proud of.
  • Check your stats on your lens from time to time. See where the traffic is coming from and what "search terms" led them to your page. You can add some of those that match what is on your lens by clicking the little plus sign next to it.
  • Update your lenses. Make sure your lens is a fresh lens. Update them often, and add new content to keep them fresh.
  • Add your lens to groups, and visit those in your group to check out their lenses.
  • Support each other. Every one of us is working hard to create great lenses. Visit each others lenses and leave feedback so they know you have been there. The larges traffic for our lenses comes from each other, honestly I learn so much from all of you.
  • Blog: Create a blog, add links to your lenses in your content.
  • Join communities specific to what your lenses are about. After all you should have a passion for whatever you are making lenses about. You can often have a link in your signature to your favorite lenses, and don't really even have to mention them in your posts. Curious people that are interested will check them out.

Go niche!

Lenses on niche topics, like a comparison list of the 10 best organic peanut butters, or your personal review of Lost Odyssey, or a debate over who the final Cyclon is in Battlestar Gallactica--these lenses do better than generic mainstream pages like "Buy an iPod here."182 points

Share your passion!

Assuming you're passionate about your topic, you're probably always talking about it, reading about it, finding out new tidbits. When you learn something new, add it to your lens. If you see an interesting discussion in a forum, turn it into a poll or a debate. Passion shows!146 points

Reread your lens

When writing, its easy for the eyes to skip over silly little typos. If you go back and really read it a few days later... The little things will jump out at you.

Update Your Lenses Frequently

I keep a notebook with a running list of various ideas to add/change my various lenses.
http://www.squidoo.com/kidsandmoney90 points

Add Link in Your Bio

Put links to all your lenses in your Bio81 points

Link from your lens to other lenses and websites, and more importantly link TO your lens, from your website, blog, forums, comments on other peoples blogs, other peoples lenses, web directories, your email .sig file, and - basically - whever you can place a link on the WWW!79 points

Submit Your Lens

Add your lens to social bookmarking sites like Digg and Stumbleupon. Also, remember to read my tips on http://www.squidoo.com/TreasureTrooperGuide75 points

Update.! Update..! Update..!

Plez.. update ur lens63 points

Add a Table of Contents

Especially if your lenses are content-rich (as they should be, of course!) and broken into multiple modules in digestible-size chunks of information (ditto), a Table of Contents gives visitors to your lens a great preview of what they can expect to find in your lens, and why it's worth reading on. Or, for someone who's looking for a specific type of information on your lens, a TOC lets that visitor jump directly to the relevant content on your lens with just one click.50 points

Share what you know!

I have been trying to do online marketing for the past three years with some success, but when I started my demon drawing lenses and other related stuff elsewhere on my blogs, the traffic I have recieved is just impressive than all that has gone before..46 points

Variety is good

Mix up different types of modules. I try to have a module with only text followed by a module with pictures (say the amazon-module). Just to mix things up a bit and create a more visually appealing lens.45 points

Relevant, Relevant, Relevant!

Though this may seem fairly obvious...focus on it, and keep your content "relevant." It doesn't ALL have to be about "one thing" as long as it is relevant to the the main topic of your lens, and that gives you more keywords and tags. You can also do a keyword search and see what keywords will work best with your content, and utilize them.36 points

Guestbook Please

I'm really disappointed when I read through a lens, like it, but there is no guestbook to add my two cents worth. See there isn't one on this lens ... but you've allowed us some room here. Thank you!35 points

Give Credit where credit is due

Be sure you link to other people's web sites or lens if you use their material.34 points

Join Squidoo Secrets to find out step by step ways.

Tip to Add Value to Your Lens

Be as specific as possible by defining who your lens is dedicated to providing value to and refine your original and new content as tight and focused as possible to ensure that those who appreciate it the most, get the most value from it.

Really enjoy the "give others a break" tip!

Thanks for all the tips!

Save Your Visitors Time

If your lens offers some services or products - do not just describe them. Remember to link exactly to where the services / goods can be purchased.31 points

Offer Something to your readers - an online award

I'm really passionate about my subject. And I started the Purple Paw award at my lens to give to other lenses that I find to be exceptional and dog related. People submit their links in the Plexo and I get more exposure. A win win for everyone.29 points

UPDATE LIKE ALL THE TIME!

I can't stress this enough, I've been neglecting mine lately and boy does it show!28 points

ADD A GREAT PROFILE PICTURE

I just joined, and it seems that the profile picture captures people's attention more than text.

By the way, I am looking forward to lensing away my weekends!27 points

This helped me! =)

It is a very good article to read, it really helped me. I will start to use your methods wright away ;)25 points

Write it from the heart

No one can surpass the writing of the heart. When it comes deep inside from the heart, your lens will really stand out. Your lens will be the genuine of all lenses....You can see if the writer wrote it for money alone or not...We can make profits in Squidoo but if you can write it straight from the heart, you will gain more than just money....24 points

Squidoo Tips

These tips are amazing to improve your squidoo lenses and will drive targeted traffic to your page.23 points

Write Like You Speak

Be yourself and others will reward you for it.23 points

Definetly Change Things Up

Update your Lens to keep people coming back to it and checking for updates that are relevant to your Lens.22 points

Research your Titles

do keyword research before writing your titles... it really helps to have keyword focused (not keyword stuffed) titles22 points

Another Great Tip

Another great tip is to think about adding links to your other lens'. In fact when you think about starting a new lens, try to create a flow with all of your lens', then you can link them so people can travel within your lens'. www.squidoo.com/howtobuildyourownlens21 points

Dont try to make it perfect

If you do this then you will lose the real reason your makeing it!21 points

Find relevant books to share on your site

Adding books for sale from Amazon on your topic, or highlighting a particular book adds links from your site and also can add income if purchased.
www.squidoo.com/hotrealestateseattle20 points

Remember to click the Publish Button!

Are writing your lens remember to click the Publish button, as it has taken me a extra week to get my site published, I thought after saving it, that was all there was to it, and could not understand why every time I check it, it was under construction, I got very annoyed, but I finally made it.
There now I feel better about this program, as I have it published now20 points

What is the meaning to words

Define the words and it will help others to learn new words and express it themselves. After all we are on the PC more than ever and some may NEVER pick up a book!!19 points

Add a Coundown Clock

Using a countdown clock it puts emphasizes important information and deadline time to participate. Visit my lense at http://www.squidoo.com/dnavitaminlaunch and click on Countdown link to see if you like it. I've received some great feedback. I would like your feedback.19 points

Pay it forward

Offers a fine gift to others sites but also allows you to be able to give something back.18 points

Using Firefox spell checking

Firefox has a built in spell checker. Use that to eliminate many of the typos.18 points

Don't put off creating a lense

Like they say, "There is no time like now!".
Just Do It!

Submit, Experiment, Test and go with what works.18 points

Convey Your Passion for Your Subject

If you are anything like me, when someone writes about a subject with an obvious interest or passion then I feel much more engaged. Write in such a way that your readers feel compelled to keep reading,17 points

Keep it readable!

Please try to keep your content readable by checking for grammatical and ortographic errors! Some of us get very annoyed when we find a misspelt word or something that doesn't make much sense. It takes our concentration away from what we're reading! So don't forget! :)17 points

Don't Monopolize Lens with ADs

It looks tacky and unprofessional.16 points

Awesome Tips!

Thanks for creating this lens and thanks to everyone for responding with your helpful tips! After making a sale, I always send a Thank You email, and add my lens for them to check out.15 points

Do the Research for a Specific Audience

If someone is looking for something, put a list of links and reviews on your lens. You can use mine as an example if you want, notice the update notes.

Featured Lenses

Make more then one lens and link them together using the Featured Lenses modules.14 points

Start a Squidoo Group - Invite Like-minded Folks to Join

There is power in being a part of a group. Groups are still relatively new in YouTube and/or Squidoo and give value to your internet ranking.
Plus, its a great way to meet others and that's what online and offline networking is all about.
Building relationships, leads to great business results.13 points

thanks

many thanks13 points

Misspelt Key Words

Consider using Misspelt keywords throughout your content as an additional source for traffic.

Take for example the word Accommodation or is it Accomodation or Acomodation or Acommodation, whatever it is, you know what We mean.

Another example of Misspelt words are same words, different Countries....Optimisation or Optimization, Organise or Organize.

End of the day though...relax, have fun and enjoy....
