Our Trip To Bermuda

Our trip to Bermuda was taken several years ago on our honeymoon. it was quite the experience from the get-go as neither one of us had ever flown. Part of the reason we chose Bermuda was because it was a short flight. The flight was uneventful, thankfully but we were very happy to arrive at our destination.

Once in Bermuda, we took a bus to our hotel, the Southampton Princess. It was an amazing place and was quite beautiful, situated high up on a hill. All of our meals with included with our package, some of them we could use at different, sister hotels. So we saw a few other hotels and explored the beautiful island, which is only around 25 miles long.

The weather in Bermuda at the end of May was ideal. Even when it rained it lasted only a few minutes. Getting around Bermuda was interesting, as we chose driving a moped (2 of us on 1) to riding the bus. It was a little scary since the roads were all winding and you drove on the opposite side of the rode.

But, everything turned out okay and it was a thoroughly enjoyable trip. The island was gorgeous, incredibly clean and friendly and you felt safe there at night. It is pricey, but worth going to. The ocean water was a greenish blue color probably due to coral, the sand was pink and the houses were all in pastels. Quite the site to behold!

Our Trip to Ogunquit Maine

Our initial visit to Ogunquit Maine was based on a recommendation by a neighbor who had visited there very frequently. Boy, are we glad we listened to our neighbor and checked it out. Ogunquit is everything you expect a Maine town to be. We have been back a couple of times, and enjoyed it just as much.

In Ogunquit, you will find the only wooden footbridges in the United States, located in Perkins Cove, once strictly a fishing community. Perkins Cove is now a place bustling with fishing, quaint stores and delicious restaurants. Along the cove, you will see the fishing boats and working lobster boats. A few of these boats are available for party or charter fishing trips.

Our personal favorite restaurant in Ogunquit is found in Perkins Cove. It is the Oarweed, located at the beginning of Marginal Way. The Oarweed is a casual family restaurant that serves lunch and dinner. They are open May-October, and every seat has an ocean view. The Oarweed serves sandwiches, seafood and chicken, as well as delicious New England Clam Chowder. After dinner, we went for a walk on Marginal Way, a walk-way which winds along Maine's beautiful coastline. It is 1 ¼ miles of magnificent footpath which boasts beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean splashing up on the rocks. Another restaurant suggested to us was Barnacle Billy's. Barnacle Billy's is a casual restaurant at the cove. We didn't eat there, but we ate at their smaller, more outdoorsy, Barnacle Billy's etc. We did eat at Barnacle Billy's etc. but found that the food wasn't great and the flies were too much.

Shopping in Perkins Cove has the typical resort feel to it. Here you can find: Dock Square Clothiers, Christmas Dove, Out of the Blue, The Pottery Shop,Swamp John's Jewelry, and Perkins Cove Candies ( always a must stop). Main more shops are located on Main Street and Shore Drive which leads up to Perkins Cove.

We stayed at the Ogunquit Resort Motel and the Wells-Ogunquit Resort which is located between Ogunquit and Wells Maine. While both places were nice the Wells-Ogunquit Resort includes a complementary breakfast buffet, which includes many homemade items, including their specialty baked beans.

While we stayed in Ogunquit, we visited nearby Kennebunkport to see the Seashore Trolley Museum. This was an enjoyable side trip and we were able to see over 200 trolleys from all over the United States and Canada. The museum is open daily from 10-5 in the summer season.

We also visited nearby Lighthouse Depot in Wells, Maine. Wells is located right outside of Ogunquit. They boast being the largest Lighthouse Depot and gift store. In addition to different sized replica lighthouses, the store sells clothing, dinnerware, jewelry and lamps. A short drive from Ogunquit, on route 1 north, the depot is worth the visit.

This is just a brief summary of what we saw and visited in Ogunquit Maine. There are many other things to do and places to visit nearby. Ogunquit is definitely worth visiting especially if you have never been there before.

Ketchikan Alaska

Our trip to Ketchikan Alaska came when I was 15 years old. At that age, I wasn't very interested in the excursion at all. We drove to British Columbia Canada and then put the car on a ferry and went to Alaska that way. I didn't see much of Alaska and I didn't appreciate then, but there were two particular things that interested me.

Alaska salmon fishing was alive and well in Ketchikan. King salmon are the largest salmon found in the area and they are found mostly in coastal salt water. They travel through the waters of Ketchikan to spawn in streams that are closer to mainland Alaska. Salmon are the most sought after fish in Alaska and even though we didn't go fishing we were able to see schools of salmon on our visit to Alaska.

Another highlight of this trip ( I was young so I don't remember everything) were the totem poles. Totem poles once thought to have religious significance, really are all about Native American heritage. They are a symbol of the Northwest clans.

These beautiful, colorful totem poles always fascinated me. Now that I am older, I appreciate the significance of their family histories, carved out in colorful stories.

Virginia Beach

For our trip to Virginia Beach a few years ago, we drove over the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge, a man made wonder which is both awe inspiring and little scary ( I have a fear of bridges). When traveling to Virginia Beach taking the tunnel bridge decreases your travel time by about 90 minutes if traveling from the New York State area. The Bridge is 20 miles long as has two lanes of traffic travelling in opposite directions. There are alternating parts of bridge and tunnels, so that boats are able to pass through at the tunnels sections. There are also two man-made islands where you can stop and visit a shop. These are located at the ends of the tunnels.

Image: dan / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Once you get over the bridge you are immediately in Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach was very clean when we visited. While there were many families there when we visited, there also seemed to be a lot of couples, and not so many teenagers. This was several years ago, so I am not sure how much has changed.

The boardwalk at Virginia Beach was different than most boardwalks we were used to. While hotels and restaurants are plentiful along the boardwalk, shops were a block away, making the boardwalk friendlier for walkers and bike riders. Near one end of the boardwalk is a small amusement park, near a fishing pier. Fireworks and concerts are often the norm in the evening hours near the boardwalk.

One of the many stores in the area is the T-shirt warehouse on Atlantic Avenue. On the same street you will find the Beach Boutique, and a Harley Shop. Many more shops are found on Laskin Road ( Pink Fish Boutique, Moorea Boutique) and on Mediterranean Avenue ( Enticer Water Sports).

Newport Rhode Island

Newport is a city in Rhode Island, about 30 miles south of Providence.Known as a summer resort and for the famous Newport Mansions, it is the home of Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport. Newport is a city known for being the summer home of US Presidents,Presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower both having homes there. John and Jacqueline Kennedy were married at St. Mary's Church in Newport.

Newport is on Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay and is only 11.5 square miles big, 7.9 miles of Newport is land, the rest is water.

Marble House Mansion- Newport

Marble House is considered one of the finest "summer" homes built in Newport.William and Alva Vanderbilt used some of their accumulated wealth and commissioned Richard Morris Hunt to build Marble House. Eleven million dollars later, and for her 39th birthday, Alva Vanderbilt got her "Marble House." In 1995, the first floor of Marble House was remodeled and a previously missing silk damask wall panel was rediscovered in a storage cabinet on another floor.

The Breakers Mansion Newport

The Breakers is a mansion on 11 acres of land in Newport Rhode Island. It was designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt. The Breakers has a lot of Italian and French design and its rooms were actually designed and created in Europe, then shipped to Newport and reassembled. The Breakers has 70 rooms, 33 of which were considered staff rooms.

Best Western Mainstay- Newport

Best Western Mainstay Inn in Newport Rhode Island is the motel we have frequented. Although we have not visited Newport in a few years, this motel was one of the best bargains there. Most of Newports motels are closer to/ on the water and a very pricey (although beautiful). So depending on what you are looking for this motel may or may not be for you.

The Mainstay Inn is located next door ( across the street from the Newport Casino) and is near the naval base and Newport shopping. The motel has an outdoor pool, a restaurant, high speed internet access and is rated 2* in the AAA book. You can get everything from a room with 2 double beds to a king suite at this location.

New London / New Haven Connecticut

We spent a short time in New London Connecticut last year as part of a trip to the Pilot Pen tennis tournament in nearby New Haven. While in New London we stayed at the very nice Spring Hill Suites by Marriott Mystic Waterford. This hotel was conveniently located off I-95 near Mystic and Olde Mistick Village.

We visited Olde Mistick Village with its quaint little shops including Penguins, Otters and others, Munson's chocolates, a kite shop, La Bottega, Teddy Bearskins and a General Store. There are many more stores and a few restaurants located here.

Olde Mistick Village is very near Mystic Seaport and Aquarium which we did not have time to visit this trip.

We also visited Mohegan Sun casino, which is about a 15 minutes north of New London in Ucasville, Connecticut. Here you can find casino excitement as well as great shops and eateries, right inside Mohegan Sun. They also have periodic entertainment which we were unable to see.

We also stopped at the Tanger outlets when we were on our way to New Haven to see the tennis tournament. These outlets were in Westbrook Connecticut near I95, exit 65. We ate at Christa's Cafe where they have delicious sandwiches at a reasonable price.

While in New London we ate at an Applebees, pretty much the same as the one at home.( check out my Applebees lens for info.) We also ate in New Haven at the Pilot Pen tournament while we were there.

If you enjoy tennis, or are interested in checking out Yale University, then stop by New Haven. Not the greatest of cities, a tour of Yale is worth it if you are in the vicinity. It is also interesting to stop at Yale University's art gallery. We stopped in during a brief rain shower and we pleasantly surprised at the interesting (and free) gallery.

New Haven has a few interesting restaurants including the Atticus Bookstore Café ( you can check out the books, too!), Caffé Bottega a place with an interesting eclectic menu, and a place we couldn't get into because the line was too long but it appears to have the best pizza around is the Frank Pepe Pizzeria.

Shopping wise, New Haven has the above mentioned Atticus Bookstore, Barnes and Noble Yale Bookstore, College Convenience and Deli, The Wine Thief, Family Dollar and many more stores located downtown near Yale. They also have the usual small restaurants such as Subway and Starbucks. For dessert, Libby's Italian Pastry shop is the best!

Walt Disney World Florida

When we visited Disney World a few years back, I found that my favorite parts were Sea World, MGM studios and Main Street in Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Sea World featured Shamu the killer whale shows and the Sea Lions were also fun. We enjoyed the Penguins, the dolphins, the sea turtles and all the animals. Sea World is the first place we went in Disney and it was a nice, low key day, completely different from the chaos of the rest of the trip.

At MGM studios we enjoyed a live stage show about Indiana Jones, complete with large rolling ball which simulated part of an avalanche. We also went on a tour bus which took us backstage and gave us a look at some movie sets. We even saw some 3D movies, complete with objects coming out of our seats behind us, as we watched giant bugs on screen.

Main Street in Disney World and Cinderella's Castle were another high light of our time in Disney World. Here we enjoyed the shops, the rides, the evening parade and the fireworks. The kids really enjoyed "It's a small world" and The Haunted Castle, and the Hall of Presidents.

On the contrary, we really didn't care for Epcot. While "Space Ship Earth" was interesting, we really didn't care for much else. We spent the shortest amount of time here.

Crystal Palace- Magic Kingdon

With our package (I honestly can't remember the hotel) we got a lunch with Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger and dinner with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Pluto. This was a real treat for all involved.

The lunch buffet was a Crystal Palace. There was a large and very good buffet with many choices and even a dessert buffet with sundaes for the kids. Of course the kids get to mingle with all their favorite characters, while you somehow manage to get them to eat!

Alexandria Bay

One of the first trips we went on (before kids) was to Alexandria Bay, New York. Located in the beautiful thousand island region of New York, up near the Canadian border, Alexandria Bay is a place I would like to go back to.

Alexandria Bay is located on the St. Lawrence River and is famous for it's quiet charm and it's proximity to water activities and to Boldt Castle. We visited Boldt Castle when we went to Alexandria Bay. Boldt Castle located on Heart Island is reachable by ferry, and was an interesting historic castle which has been continually renovated.

For all its beauty, the castle has a sad story on which it is based. It was built in the late 1800's by George Boldt for his wife Louise. Boldt was a poor man from Prussia who came to America and became a successful hotel mogul. He is known more for the Waldorf Astoria in NY City and the Belleuve-Stratford in Philadelphia.

Boldt spent over 2.5 million dollars ( a fortune at the time) to build a replica of a Rhineland castle for his wife on Heart Island at Alexandria Bay. He was going to give it to her for a Valentine's gift. However, Louise died before he could and the castle was never finished.

In 1977 the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took over the castle and has been renovating it. It now has a gift shop, restrooms, museum dedicated to the Boldts and a playhouse where the Boldts lived for a short time. There is even a Yacht house a short distance from the castle.

Palmer House Resort

Palmer House is surrounded by the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. Manchester is the quintessential New England Town, and is a four-season resort destination. Palmer House has an indoor and outdoor pool, 2 tennis courts, a 9 hole, par three golf course, a jacuzzi and several suites which have their own private jacuzzi's and fireplaces. They have a small breakfast room where they serve a continental breakfast for $2.50/pp. They also have patio breakfast dining in the summer. On our visit, our cost for a king suite with jacuzzi, fireplace and dinner for two at Ye Olde Tavern was $500 for 2 nights. A pretty good deal, especially for an Anniversary weekend.

Mulligan's Restaurant

Our first night in Manchester we visited Mulligan's Restaurant. Having visited a sister restaurant in nearby Stratton Vermont a few years ago, we decided to give this a try. Mulligan's has a relaxed family-friendly rustic atmosphere featuring prime steaks, fresh seafood, poultry, pastas, crisp salads, burgers, sandwiches & of course children's menu. My husband had the delcious New England Clam Chowder and the scallops and I had a Shepherds Pie with sirloin beef tips instead of the usual ground beef. Our meals there were delicious, the service efficient and the cost around $30, which included drinks, very reasonable.

Manchester Shopping

Most shops in Manchester are located on either Route 7A, Main Street, Depot Street or on Routes 11/30. For the most part there are outlets a few of which ( Tommy Hilfiger for example) that have closed since we were last there. However, there are still a great many to choose from. Our main complaint was that there were hardly any open past 5pm. It may have been since we were visiting before Memorial Day, but I am not sure. Anyway, I have listed some here to give you an idea what is still available.

There were more stores but because of restricted shopping hours, these were about all we visited.

Ye Olde Tavern

Ye Olde Tavern was built in 1790 and was originally called the Stagecoach Inn. It had a ballroom back then. Eventually it became a hotel and then was finally renovated into the Ye Olde Tavern back in the 1976 for our country's bicentennial.

One of the places we ate while in Manchester was Ye Olde Tavern. It was an excellent meal that was included in our hotel package deal. Our dinner included a delicious French Onion Soup appetizer, delicious cranberry fritters and warm bread. The main entree was steak in mushroom gravy with potatoes and vegetable and our choice of an ice cream sundae or apple crisp.

Washington D.C.

We just got back from visiting Washington D.C. Our hotel, the Washington Suites is pictured. We had a 2 bedroom suite since there was 5 of us. It featured a room with 2 queen beds, a room with a king bed and a living room with a sofa sleeper. Each room had it's own tv, we had 2 bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and plates and utensils (we did no cooking!).

The room cost $239 which we thought was reasonable for the room, breakfast and close proximity to and free shuttle service to the metro. We also got a daily newspaper and had a manager's reception on one night which included meatballs, pasta, potato and pasta salad, fresh fruit, soda , wine and beer. An excellent choice, that I would rate a 4/5. My only complaint was that the room could have used better lighting, and it had a slightly older carpet that could have used replacing, otherwise, it was quite nice.

Rockport, Massachusetts

We recently visited Rockport, Mass. on Cape Ann. This quaint town is about 30 minutes or so north of Boston, which is an easy day trip. We stayed at the Rockport Inn and Suites. The rooms are a little pricey ( we paid $188/n for a room for 4) . The rate did include a decent breakfast buffet and the motel had a tennis court and an indoor pool. Rockport Inn and Suites also had a small fitness center, free wireless internet and jacuzzi. Check out some of my gallery photos of Rockport.

Philadelphia/Atlantic City

Our second short vacation this summer was to Philadelphia and Atlantic City. We stayed at the Residence Inn Valley Forge and traveled a 1/2 hour to Philadelphia for a Phillies game, some Jim's South Street Cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, the Federal Reserve and The Mint. We also spent a rainy day at the Boardwalk in Atlantic City

Philadelphia has many historic sites and many historic neighborhoods and more than a few days are needed to do justice to the city. We didn't have time to visit the impressive Art Museum although we took photos of the outside where Sylvester Stallone ran up the steps in his 1st Rocky Movie ( see gallery).

Interesting places, no doubt. But you are missing a lot. There are many, many beautiful and interesting places outside the U.S. and most of them have to offer something you cannot have in the United States. history of more than 250 years!
Being German I´d suggest Trier for instance, the Roman capital for the territories North of the Alps until 164 They celebrated their 2000 years of existence in 1985, the Roman name was Augusta Treverorom and it can still be recognized in the modern form of its name....
Anyway, travel more and share it with us.
