Come On Baby Let's Do the Twist

Became popular in New York's 45th Street Peppermint Lounge?
And got the likes of Marilyn Monroe, First Lady Jackie Kennedy, Noel Coward, Conway Twitty, Norman Mailer, and even Dick Clark to gyrate their hips?
The Twist, of course, and we're all still doing it today.

Do You Remember When Things Were Really Hummin' ?
Let's Twist Again
The Twist is so much more than a dance fad that swept the nation. The Twist shook this country up and led it through its awkward transitional stage from the somewhat subdued 1950's into the wilder, crazier era of free love in the 60's.Although Chubby Checker is responsible for popularizing the Twist, it was actually Hank Ballard who recorded it first after watching black teenagers grooving on the dance floor of the Buddy Deane Show in Baltimore, back in 1960. The Buddy Deane show is represented as the Corny Collins Show in the movie, Hairspray.
Chubby Checker re-recorded The Twist and then performed it on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, creating a new dance sensation that brought respectibility to the idea that shaking-your-booty was now okay within the caucasian sector.
American teenagers picked it up immediately and were followed quickly by many adults who liked the easy dance steps that required no formal instruction. Once the socialites discovered it, The Twist rapidly took on a life of its own.
And the world of dancing was forever changed.

Well They've Got a New Dance and it Goes Like This
How to Do the Twist
"It goes round and round, up and downRound and round, up and down
Round and round and a up and down
And a one two three kick, one two three jump"
A member of the Chubby Checker entourage came up with this explanation when asked how to do the Twist.
"It's like putting out a cigarette with both feet, and wiping your bottom with a towel, to the beat of the music."
Basically, there is no hard and fast rule on how to correctly do the twist. That's what makes it so much fun. No matter how hard you try, you just can't get it wrong!

Award winning director Ron Mann (Grass, Comic Book Confidential) takes the viewer on another hilarious, hip-swinging journey into pop history. More than just 'the dance craze that swept the nation', the twist symbolized an era of transition between Eisenhower's 50s and the counter-culture's 60s - from innocent youths to socially conscious hippies. A superb orchestration of archival footage, performances and interviews, Twist is as much fun as it is culturally intriguing. Home Vision Entertainment is proud to present this award-winning documentary on DVD for the first time.

The History of The Twist
Wikipedia Article
The Twist was a dance in the 1960s, inspired by rock and roll music. It became a worldwide craze, enjoying immense popularity among young people and drawing fire from critics who felt it was too provocative. It was the first international rock and roll dance of its kind. It inspired dances such as the Mashed Potato, the Monkey and the Funky chicken, although none were as popular. The dance was inspired by ?The Twist,? B-side of Hank Ballard's single ?Teardrops on your letter? in 1959.
