What is the Ultimate Gift?

I've read the book The Ultimate Gift and watched the movie several times and I still cry . . . at many points, actually! It's such a touching, uplifting and inspirational story that has sparked an entire movement of kindness, sharing gifts, and giving to friends, family, others, and anyone in need.

It's a story about Jason Stevens, a wealthy, "spoiled" young man with an attitude. When Jason's great-uncle (grandfather in the movie) dies, Jason ungratefully expects to receive a huge financial inheritance.

Instead, he receives "The Ultimate Gift" as his inheritance, which involves a year-long journey about what's really important in life. As his great-uncle states, "If you stay the course over the next year, and embrace each element, at that point you will be the recipient of the most significant bequest I can leave you through my will. . . . [and you'll] have the further responsibility of passing along the ultimate gift whenever it is possible."

So . . . what is the ultimate gift?

You'll have to read the book to find out!

Inspirational Quote

"Love is a treasure for which we can never pay. The only way we keep it is to give it away."

The Ultimate Gift: The Book

This book is a quick, easy read and it's not one that's full of classic literary quality (and that's not its point) . . . but it's a book full of depth and meaning that can change lives.

Each chapter takes you through Jason Steven's journey of lessons set out for him by his late great-uncle, Red Stevens. And each lesson touches the heart. I think I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat after every, single chapter.

I highly recommend this book for the lessons it teaches and the inspiration it provides. I believe very strongly in the movement that the book has created - - the spreading of the ultimate gift around the world.

Profound Point

I love what's said about the gift of giving: "One of the key principles in giving, however, is that the gift must be yours to give - either something you earned or created or maybe, simply part of yourself."

It can be so simple, really. A smile. A hug. A listening ear. Those are all gifts that offer a part of yourself to another. They're simple for you, but can be huge to the person receiving them. Check out my random acts of kindness lens for more on this.

Inspirational Quote

"In the end, life lived to its fullest is its own ultimate gift."

The Ultimate Gift: The Movie

I watched the movie before I read the book. I suggest doing it the other way around if you haven't yet read the book or watched the movie. I think you'll have more of an appreciation for the book if you read it first without the embellishments of the film.

That's not to say that the movie isn't good, because it is. It's excellent. I just think it's best to read the book first.

The movie is powerful.

It includes all the main concepts and lessons from the book (although some aren't presented quite as clearly) but it adds theatrical or dramatic elements that illustrate the lessons more powerfully. It also introduces new story lines that contribute to the lessons that Jason learns.

Of course, I can't give anything away . . . so you'll have to watch for yourself. You can watch the movie trailer below.

Profound Point

Something else that touched me significantly in the book is this: "I know that at some point I will live the last day of my life. I have been thinking about how I would want to live that day or what I would do if I had just one day left to live. I have come to realize that if I can get that picture in my mind of maximizing one day, I will have mastered the essence of living, because life is nothing more than a series of days."

I've thought about this before in my life. It wasn't the first time that I encountered the idea when I read it in the book. But there was just something about how it was worded in The Ultimate Gift that struck me strongly.

We get so busy. We go crazily about our days, often doing things we "should" do or "have to" do, kind of missing the point . . . missing the essence of life . . . rapidly moving through our days until we reach a point where we wonder what we really did with our life. I think it's a powerful thing to ponder this quote and this concept and to work to really focus on today, each day, and on making the best day . . . as though it was our last.

Inspirational Quote

"I could . . . spread the ultimate gift all around the world."

Jim Stovall, the Author of The Ultimate Gift

Jim Stovall was a football player with dreams of playing in the NFL. But he was told that he would soon go blind . . . and the doctors had no idea why. He lost his dream of playing football, but that didn't stop him from pursuing and succeeding in other dreams. He became an Olympic wrestler, successful business man, and inspiring author and speaker. Jim, through his Narrative Television Network, makes TV and movies available to individuals who are blind. He also works to spread the message of The Ultimate Gift around the world.

Profound Point

I'm processing this concept: "Our passions and dreams and goals are the outward manifestations of the love we feel inside."

It's one of those statements that makes me go, "Hmmm."

It does that because I wonder if that's really the case for most people. Are our passions and dreams and goals really the outward manifestations of the love we feel inside? Or are they based on misaligned desires or other people's wishes for us or simply on the circumstances we find ourselves in?

I know this quote from the book has certainly impacted me and caused me to take a long, hard look at what I'm doing.

How about for you?
