The Villages is a 55 and over retirement community in central Florida. It is located about 20 miles south of Ocala and 60 miles northwest of Orlando, spanning parts of Lake, Marion, and Sumter Counties.
The Villages is a golf cart community, meaning golf carts may be safely and legally driven on the special transportation trails built especially for carts and along many roads 24 hours a day. This is a huge draw for residents. Being able to drive your golf cart to the grocery store, the post office, to dinner, even the hospital.
The Villages has its own daily paper The Villages Daily Sun, its own radio station (WVLG - 640 AM) and a cable channel (VNN - The Villages News Network). These media properties are owned and operated by The Villages. There is a free online forum for current and future residents of the villages.
The Villages is developed and maintained using what's known as a Community Development District (CDD). There are more than 200 communities in Florida that are currently using this form of government. Read more about CDD's in the book Florida for Boomers: A Guide to Real Estate.
There are 2 homeowners associations in The Villages. The Property Owners Association (POA) and The Villages Homeowners Association (VHA).
