Is our planet heating up?

According to many reports, the answer would be a definite yes. Last year, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported that the earth was about 0.75 degrees warmer than it was in 1850. While 0.75 doesn't sound threatening, a small amount of change in average temperature could make a big difference in climate. During the last ice age, the planet was just five degrees cooler than now. This fact poses a great threat to our climate and sadly, to our survival.
hot years!

Talk about hot days, eleven of the hottest years since 1850 occurred between 1995 and 2006.

Introductory video on global warming

Global Warming: Point of No Return?

James Lovelock says Global Warming is now at point of no return. Other top climate scientists are more hopeful but say we only have less than 10 years before it's irreversible and time is running out. Bush Administrations been accused of asking top climate scientists at NASA to STOP speaking out about the climate crisis and of altering scientific journals reporting on the phenomenon. We all need to speak up NOW or the Human Race will join the MILLIONS of other Species that will be extinct by 2050 from Global Warming. www.climatecrisis.net www.greatemergence.blogspot.com

Mass Migration and Relocation

Near the poles would be a very suitable place to live in, according to fellow fauna, and flora tend to agree as well.

Since it is warmer nowadays, animals and plants are moving towards the poles in search of cooler habitats. Since the 1980's British observers spotted tropical fish previously unknown in the North Atlantic. In 2001, a fisherman caught a barracuda off the coast of Cornwall, England, far north of its normal range. As global warming changes the face of habitats around the world, scientists are asking if humans can help save species from extinction by moving them to cooler climates. Although animal resettlements and transports may be already at our grasp, new alternative methods are still yet to be found.

In the past, temperatures moved up or down gradually. But since 1976, temperatures have likely risen more quickly during any century in the last 1000 years. Although it may bring increased yields for northern countries such as Russia, many species of animals won't likely adapt to these conditions.

Pine Beetle

The pine beetle which thrives during warmer winters, has already destroyed approximately 13 million hectares of Canadian forests worth an estimated $6 billion.

melting glaciers

Urgency and action are dire needs as glaciers are melting and the earth's humidity is constantly increasing. In 2005, the Zurich-based World Glacier monitoring service stated that European glaciers had lost half of their volume since 1850. In March 2007, Russian researchers reported unstable permafrost in the Baikal area, Mongolia and China. And in October this year, British researchers showed that warmer temperatures were responsible for a 2.2 percent increase in the earth's humidity over the last 30 years.

What is causing all of this?

...or maybe who?

Global Warming
The IPCC concluded that human activity is very likely responsible, by increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect. Over 25 scientific societies, including the national academies of science of the G8 nations, endorsed the conclusion.

With the fate of our planet arguably hanging in the balance, An Inconvenient Truth may prove to be one of the most important and prescient documentaries of all time. As he jokingly refers to himself, "former President-elect" Al Gore felt an urgent personal calling to draw attention--as he had been doing throughout his political career--to the increasingly desperate crisis of global warming, and this riveting documentary is basically a filmed version (by respected TV director Davis Guggenheim) of the PowerPoint lecture that Gore has presented (by his own estimate, well over 1,000 times) to attentive audiences all over the world. Considering Gore's amiable, low-key approach to charts, graphs, statistics, and photographs that leave no room for doubt regarding the reality (not "theory") of global warming as Earth's ultimate environmental crisis, many viewers will be surprised by just how fascinating and convincing this no-frills film really is.

The greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect.

The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and water vapor. Except CFCs, common for its commercial purposes, the gases are found in nature. The burning of fossil fuels, trees and agricultural wastes adds to the carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, as do coal mines, oil refineries and even landfills. The increase in these gases affect water vapor indirectly resulting to and increased amounts of vapor as well.

These greenhouse gases cause the earth's atmosphere to trap heat energy at the earth's surface which is coined as the greenhouse effect. With the increase of these gases, the planet may be heated up too much and that means big trouble for all its inhabitants.

"Carbon dioxide has increased at an alarming 35 percent since the beginning of the industrial era. Methane has more than doubled. Nitrous oxide has gone up 17 percent" says Gavin Schmidt, a climatologist with NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies in New York. While we has stabilized our CFCs and methane emissions, we have not done the same with carbon dioxide so far. The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to rise about 0.4 percent per year because about 85 percent of our energy requirements involve fossil fuel and that proves to be more than a mere concern for scientist nowadays.
Carbon dioxide does not dissipate by itself, yet natural systems are able to absorb about a half of our 23.5 gigatonne (A gigatonne is a trillion kilograms) annual emission. That leaves about 11.75 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide every year at an increasing rate more to solve.

What can we all do to help solve the problem?

We are in for something nasty if we dont solve this problem!

One word, AWARENESS. Be aware and help others be aware of what we are facing. Perhaps awareness is our best bet to promote action. The fate of the world lies in our hands.

Anyone who lives in a northern country, such as Canada, knows from experience that mosquitoes thrive in cool locations. One of the largest deadly outbreaks of mosquitoes-spread malaria happened in Russia. I think something like 600,000 Russians died. Mosquitoes don't need to move North. They are already here! Wether they carry malaria or not is unrelated to weather. We also know that they can transmit other diseases, such as West Nile, in very cool climates. Trying to link mosquito-spread disease with Climate Change seems to be politically-driven fear mongering. It is very common in the mainstream media, however I urge you to research the facts and use your own reason before repeating what may simply be propaganda. That being said, I do support the drive to reduce our dependence on oil. Not because of climate change, but because of Peak Oil.

Diabetes develops due to a diminished production of insulin (in type 1) or resistance to its

effects (in type 2 and gestational). Both lead to hyperglycemia, which largely causes the acute signs of

diabetes: excessive urine production, resulting compensatory thirst and increased fluid intake, blurred vision,

unexplained weight loss, lethargy, and changes in energy metabolism.

Acne vulgaris (commonly called acne) is a common skin condition, caused by changes in

the pilosebaceous units, skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland via

androgen stimulation. It is characterized by noninflammatory follicular papules or comedones and by

inflammatory papules, pustules, and nodules in its more severe forms. Acne vulgaris affects the areas of skin

with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the face, the upper part of the chest,

and the back. Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in noninflammatory forms. Acne lesions

are commonly referred to as pimples, blemishes, spots, zits, or acne.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost alwayscaused by exposure to asbestos. In

this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's

internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it may

also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart, the pericardium (a sac that

surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis.
