What happened in 1960? I was born in that year, so I decided to make a lens about 1960. It was a transition year from the fun, clean 1950's to the turmoil and political change that was going on. January 2-John F. Kennedy announces he is running for president.
February 1- 4 black college students protest not being served at a Woolworth's lunch counter.
February 12- France tests their first nuclear bomb.
March 6-The first 3500 United Soldiers are to be sent to Vietnam.
April 21-Brazil changes its capital city from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia.
May 1-The Soviet Union shoots down a spy plane from the United States and captures the pilot, Francis Powers.
May 6-The Civil Rights Act of 1960 is signed into law by President Eisenhower.
May 10-The United States submarine, the USS Triton, is the first submarine to go around the world completely submerged.
May 15- The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 4.
July 1-A Soviet fighter place shoots down 4 Americans aboard a RB-47 plane. Two Americans survive and are imprisoned.
July 13-John F. Kennedy is nominated as the democratic nominee for president in Los Angeles.
July 21-Sri Lanka(Ceylon at the time) makes world history as it elects the first female head of a country ever to be elected.
July 21-Woolworth's lunch counters agree to serve black customers and does it for the first time.
July 25-Richard Nixon is nominated for president by the republicans in Chicago.
August 17-19-The captured pilot, Francis Powers is found guilty by the Soviet Union and sentenced to 10 years.
August 19-The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 5, complete with dogs, mice, and rats who all return safely.
September 14-OPEC is formed. The founding members are Venezuela, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
September 26-The first televised presidential debate happens between Nixon and Kennedy.
October 26-Martin Luther King jr., is released from a jail in Atlanta, Georgia. He was in on a traffic violation and Robert Kennedy helped get his release.
November 8-John F. Kennedy is elected president.
(Note: He is not president until 1961)
December 5-The Supreme Court decides that segregation is illegal in public transportation.

Boston Celtics defeat the St. Louis Hawks to win the NBA title.

Squaw Valley, California hosts the 1960 Winter Olympics. Carol Heiss of the United States is the woman's gold medal winner in figure skating. The American men win the gold medal in hockey.

Rome hosts the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Cassius Clay wins the gold medal.

Floyd Patterson wins the heavy weight boxing championship by defeating Ingemar Johansson,

Tour de France is won by Italian Gastone Nencini.

Minnesota wins the NCAA football championship.

The Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Green Bay Packers for the NFL title.

Houston beats San Diego for the AFL championship.

Arnold Palmer wins the Masters and the US Open.

Venetian Way wins the Kentucky Derby.

Montreal defeats Toronto for the Stanley Cup.

Neale Fraser (Australia) wins Wimbledon.

Rafer Johnson and Wilma Rudolph are named Athlete's of the Year.
