Chris Thile and the Evolution of the Mandolin

Ranked #7,974 in Music, #213,207 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund, Big Cat Rescue

While searching for lenses, I typed in the name of my favorite musician: Chris Thile. I was shocked to find that in the entire Squidoo community there was not a single lens featuring him. Thile, a mandolin prodigy, has, along with a few others, completely revolutionized the sound of the mandolin. The mandolin is itself a rather obscure instrument to most of the musical world. Whenever I'm carrying mine around, people often mistake it for a ukulele. My purpose for this lens is to detail the changes in the sound of the mandolin, showcase its explosion outside the boundaries of traditional bluegrass, and establish an outlet to promote the music of Chris Thile. Even if you're already a seasoned Thile fan, I encourage you to check out this lens; I bet you'll find out something you didn't know about him. And even if you don't, it's still great music.

Hope you enjoy,

-John

The Evolution of the Sound of the Mandolin

Though there have been many players who have helped the mandolin on its way, such as David Grisman, Sam Bush, and Mike Marshall, my focus in this lens is on Chris Thile, and how he has changed the sound of the instrument. A major way that Thile and these other players changed the sound of the mandolin was by lowering the action on the instrument. This means that they lowered the strings, making them closer to the fretboard. By doing this, they were able to get a much more articulate sound than in traditional bluegrass. For most bluegrass players, the "chop," a percussive technique where the strings are played in such a way as to emphasize the beat rather than the actual notes of the chord, is the focus of their playing. While many of the newer mandolin players still employ the bluegrass chop, their individual notes are much cleaner and easier to hear.

A Traditional Bluegrass Tune

Blackberry Blossom is a traditional bluegrass tune. Below, you'll find a youtube video of how new players are taking simple bluegrass songs and turning them into innovative displays of skill and sound. Mike Marshall plays the mandolin, and Hamilton de Holanda, a Brazilian player, plays the bandolim, a mandolin with two extra strings.

The Evolution of Chris' Music

Chris put out his first album, Leading Off, at the ripe age of twelve. In it, he plays some traditional tunes as well as some of his own compositions. All of them, though, remain pretty much within the realm of standard bluegrass. His second CD, Stealing Second, also stays well within the bluegrass world. In this album, his sound begins to get a little more articulate, and, though the compositions, every one of which Thile composed, are more complicated than those in Leading Off, there is no question that it is a bluegrass album. Preview the albums below and you'll see what I mean.

Leading Off

This is an album Chris put out at the age of twelve, the same age he was when he won the national mandolin championship. It represents the beginning of his sound on the instrument.

A New Sound

With Chris' third solo album, Not All Who Wander Are Lost, his sound on the mandolin changed completely. Here, Thile plays much more articulate notes than had ever been heard before in the world of the mandolin. The two other albums you can preview, Into the Cauldron and How to Grow a Woman From the Ground, though not his only releases since Not All Who Wander Are Lost, give a good impression of how his sound has changed since his bluegrass upbringing.

Feedback

Please give me your feedback. If you have information you think I should add to the evolution of the mandolin, please let me know. I know more about the mandolin than most, but I am by no means an expert, and I want this lens to be the best resource it can be. Also, I would appreciate your thoughts on my lens in general
