100 Things I Want to Teach My Son
Ranked #1,811 in Parenting & Kids, #58,914 overall
Things I Want to Teach My Son Before He Begins His Own Journey
This is my list of the things that I believe will teach him to make the best possible choices for himself, and help him to live a happy, healthy, successful life.
I know we all want the same things for our kids. We want them to be happy. We want them to be healthy. We want them to be successful. From the time they enter our lives, until the time they leave home, we have a magical window of opportunity to teach them what counts in life, and what we believe to be the most important things.
I hope my words inspire you to create your own list and to add your ideas to my list too, for as we all know, parenting is not always easy and "It takes a village to raise a child."

“You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.”
These were life-changing words for me by Kahlil Gibran....
Almost 20 years before my son was born, when I was a young teenager, I read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. I can still remember how I felt the first time I read his poem On Children. It felt like I had received a beautiful gift, a knowing deep down in my soul that this was to become a truth for me.That same day, as I read and re-read On Children, I made a promise to myself that if I ever had a child, I would live and parent by those words. Today and every day, as I think of the things I want to teach my son, I remind myself that I can give him my love but not my thoughts and I can house his body but not his soul.
I have read this poem dozens of times since then, and even now, as I type these words, I get teary-eyed and filled with gratitude.
On Children
from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
If you have already read The Prophet then you know how beautiful and powerful the words are. I have read hundreds of books over the years, yet this is still on my list of absolute favorite books of all time.
I've given it away as a gift more times than I can remember. I wish it were required reading for teens before they graduate, for couples before they get married, and especially for parents before they have kids. Highly, highly recommended reading.
The words are especially powerful when you hear them....

I want to Teach My Son to Make Beautiful Music
Live as "If Today Was Your Last Day"
10 things I want to teach my son (from the lyrics by Nickelback)
- Each day's a gift and not a given right
- Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind
- And try to take the path less traveled by
- That first step you take is the longest stride
- Against the grain should be a way of life
- What's worth the price is always worth the fight
- Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
- So live like you're never living twice
- Don't take the free ride in your own life
- Let nothing stand in your way
"Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time."
Betty Smith
Take the Road Less Traveled By
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost (1874-1963)
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
"Two roads diverged in a wood,
and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
Robert Frost
Learn to Take Road Less Traveled
"For it matters not,
how much we own,
the cars, the house, the cash,
what matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash."
Linda Ellis
The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard;
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
I Want to Teach My Son to Cook
Healthy food, real food, food from the earth, FOODS of INTENTION
I Hope You Dance
When you get the choice to sit it out or dance...
I hope you dance
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin',
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin',
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin' out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance.
Lyrics: I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack
I Hope You Dance....I Hope You Dance
Don't Quit
The Don't Quit Poem
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

- Sometimes we have to go through very hard times - but knowing that we are the world to this one person, that we can make or break a little soul, that we are the model on which (s)he interprets the world and his/herself... we find the strength and the means to get out of the mess, better than before.
Great lens!

- Amazing lens! I love this list of 100 things you want to teach your son... I had really hard time to pick the best one to vote... and decided that "You must do the things you think you cannot do." by Eleanor Roosevelt will, in my opinion, "cover" most of them. I'm trying to live each day of my life as it is the last day, then hopefully in the end I won't have anything to regret.

- All my favourites, the ones you included here. This will go well with my lens Values for Life. I used to read and reread Gibran's just to remind me that we need to give our children space to grow and become their own persons.
