What is eExtension?

This lens will help you understand eExtension and some of the terms used in discussing eExtension. While some of the language and tools might be new the principles of eExtension are very similar to traditional Extension. If you have been working in Agricultural, Natural Resource Management or Environmental Extension and you can create an email or a word document you already have all the skills you need to be an eExtension Rockstar.

Since the first step to learning a new field is learning the language, let's get started right away with the language of eExtension.

eExtension Terms and Glossary.

Blog

A blog (which is short for weblog) is a particular type of website. There are a number of difference variations of blogs however they generally have some common features;

* publish articles in chronological order (usually last article first)
* easy to add content
* allow readers to subscribe to a feed of articles
* allow readers to comment on articles
* index very well with search engines

eExtension

eExtension is the use of Web and Social Media tools to share and create Agricultural and Environmental knowledge.

RSS or RSS feed

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is simply a stream of information most commonly blog posts, podcasts, videos, or images that can be subscribed to. For example if you subscribe to a blog with an RSS feed reader like Google Reader. You will receive blog articles as they are published, much like an email inbox for feeds.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 describes a trend in the way Web technology is delivered.The best way to think about Web2.0 is consider some of it's features.

* Highly Interactive i.e. users can comment on, tag, and share information easily.
* Rich Media can include photos, videos, and audio flies.
* Highly Connected and portable. e.g. photos uploaded to Flickr (photo sharing site) can be added to a blog with 2 clicks, or a blog post on one site can automatically link to another blog that has referenced it.
* Easy to Use i.e. you don't need to be a programmer to maintain a blog, upload a video, or create a social network.
* Often Free. So many Web2.0 sites and applications are free to use.
