ThinkFun's Rush Hour - Puzzle Fun for the Family
Ranked #10,164 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #137,952 overall
Can You Solve the Rush Hour Traffic Jam Puzzle?
Oh no! The little red car (or maybe ice cream van) is stuck in a rush hour traffic jam. Think you can get him out?
I use this game all the time in my work Think Fun's Rush Hour - the junior version, that is - and it's quite a challenge. Set up the board according to pattern given on one of the 40 cards, then move the pieces one by one (obeying the traffic laws!) until the red car is able to escape the rush hour traffic jam.
Think it's just a game? It won a national award from Mensa and is even used occasionally in a variety of educational classes. There are four levels of puzzles - intermediate, advanced, expert and grand master. The easier puzzles take around 20 moves to solve while grand master can take as many as 50!
I use Rush Hour in my work with children particularly when teaching Anger management, conflict resolution, problem solving, cognitive reframing etc. The children all love this game and learn so much from it as well as having fun. I've used with children from age around 6 years right through to 14 years or so. I've also played it with my step daughters who absolutely loved it.
I've even taken it on holiday and sat and played while sunning myself on a Greek beach!

What Happens Once You Master Rush Hour?
Additional sets offer new challenges for the entire family
The original Rush Hour game comes with 40 cards at different levels but the fun doesn't stop once you've solved the original brainteasers. There are several sets of additional cards (with new vehicles!) to play once you solve the original set. Each set comes with 40 cards as well and in the same four levels of difficulty as the original - intermediate, advanced, expert and grand master. The answers are on the back side of the card if you need some hints to solve these puzzles.
Rush Hour 2 comes with an escape vehicle, Rush Hour 3 has a white limo and Rush Hour 4 adds a yellow taxi.

Another critical thinking game with challenge cards
The game most fans of Rush Hour move on to next is ThinkFun's Tipover. Like Rush Hour, there are four skill levels and 40 challenge cards to complete. Set up the towers as shown on the card, then tip the buildings over to get your man around the board. Critical thinking, problem solving and strategy development are the name of this game!Tipover takes the challenge to a third dimension with the addition of heights for each of the towers (or buildings or crates or whatever they most look like to you). Add to that the condition that your man (the Tipper) can't reach the end goal by jumping over crates or touching the game board. Think you can tip everything over in just the right pattern to make a path around the board to the red crate? It's not as easy as it sounds. Expect a lot of do-overs en route!

Comparing brainteasers from another company
ThinkFun dominates the market for brain teaser games the whole family can enjoy. But they aren't the only company delivering the goods. I recently discovered the line of puzzle games from Popular Playthings, including the HooDoo Mesa Puzzle pictured here. The puzzle games from Popular Playthings are rated well by players for their challenge. Several reviewers said they probably weren't for casual gamers, although the hint cards were helpful in getting to the solution when you were stuck. They also have much more detailed game pieces than the ThinkFun games, so if you have a player than needs more visual interest in their games, you might get that here.
In general, the challenges provide similar kinds of thinking as the ThinkFun puzzles - strategy development, critical thinking, spatial relationships. For that reason, they're a good avenue to take if you're looking for a slightly different puzzle adventure than you're used to from ThinkFun.
