Think Pink - Pink Flamingos, That Is!

The phrase "pink flamingos" invokes different visual images to different people. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a flamingo is "any of several large aquatic birds (family Phoenicopteridae) with long legs and neck, webbed feet, a broad lamellate bill resembling that of a duck but abruptly bent downward, and usually rosy-white plumage with scarlet wing coverts and black wing quills."

This lens explores some of the ways this elegant and sometimes humorous pink feathered bird has been depicted - in art deco pottery, Turner art deco art prints and mirrors, plastic lawn ornaments, recipes, flowers and plants, award-winning BBQ sauce and more.

If you are a collector of Maddux pink flamingo pottery, you'll find an invaluable resource in this lens for identification and dating.

And if you think you've seen everything "Pink Flamingo," how about Chocolate Flamingo Droppings? Mmm....drooling yet?

Pink Flamingos Headed for Extinction?

In the 1950s when America's populus was heading to the suburbs and Florida tourism was booming, the plastic pink flamingo lawn ornament was hatched. In just under 50 years, production of Union Product's pink flamingo lawn ornament (the original) had reached an amazing 250,000 units per year. By 2006 our mock feathered friend was facing extinction. Faced with increased costs and loss of financing, the original plastic pink flamingo's Massachusetts manufacturer, Union Products, closed its doors November 2006.

Don't despair. It's not time to mourn yet. HMC Products International LLC in Westmoreland, New York, purchased the copyright and plastic molds to resume production. Tacky or not, you will still be able to purchase original pink flamingo lawn ornaments...and if you have the originals, hang on to them. They may become a valuable collectible. Originals have the signature of the creator, Don Featherstone, etched on the rear end and were manufactured by Union Products.

More from MSNBC.

What makes flamingos pink?

"Young flamingos hatch with grey plumage, but adults range from light pink to bright red due to aqueous bacteria and beta carotene obtained from their food supply. A well-fed, healthy flamingo is more vibrantly coloured.... A white or pale flamingo, however, is usually unhealthy or malnourished. Captive flamingos are a notable exception; many turn a pale pink as they are not fed carotene at levels comparable to the wild. This is changing as more zoos begin to add prawns and other supplements to the diets of their flamingos." (Thank you Wikipedia for enlightening us on this subject! Read more...)

Identifying William Maddux of California Pottery

Identifying and dating a piece of pottery can be time consuming and tedious. If you are a buyer, seller, or collector, the information at the William Maddux Pottery website can help you in that endeavor. The website was created by Bob Maddux, the second son of Harry William Maddux who was the founder of the pottery company that became "Maddux of California."

Of particular assistance to collectors are collector photographs and PDF files of Maddux wholesale catalogs from 1958 and 1960 available at the William Maddux website. The Maddux of California flamingo below was found in the 1958 Maddux Wholesale catalog and identified by the number 400 on the base.

BBQ Pink Flamingos? Yummy!

BBQ a pink flamingo? Not hardly. The reference in the title of this lens is to the Pink Flamingo brand of BBQ sauce. This lensmaster has never tasted Pink Flamingo BBQ sauce, but it sounds intriguing. In fact, Pink Flamingo BBQ Sauce was the GRAND CHAMPION sauce at the 2004 Coors Colorado Barbecue Challenge.

Check out the Pink Flamingo BBQ Sauce website.

The Pink Flamingo Plant, also known as Shooting Star, American Cowslip, Indian Chief, and Rooster Heads is a perrenial with tropical pink pendand-shaped blossoms.

A beautiful ground cover, the Clematis Pink Flamingo Plant has mauve pink flowers with a deep pink blotch at the base of each sepal.

There are also Pink Flamingo Daffodils, Pink Flamingo African Violets and many others.

Another Pink Flamingo Cocktail

1 1/4 oz pineapple rum
1/2 oz Sprite® soda
6 oz lemonade
1/2 oz grenadine syrup
1/2 oz simple syrup

Preparation:
Combine lemonade, sprite, grenadine, simple syrup, and ice in a blender (should end up looking like a pink slush). Pour into a pina-colada glass. Add the rums and serve.

How about Pink Flamingo Wine?

Yes, if you search for "pink flamingo wine" you will find a white French wine named Pink Flamingo at several online wine sellers. The average price is approximately $10.99 for a 750ml bottle.

I don't drink alcoholic beverages, so I can't comment on its taste. Add a comment in the guestbook if you have a review to share!

Flamingos in Literature and Fiction

The 1949 Flamingo Road motion picture starring Joan Crawford and the 1981 television series were based on the novel by Robert Wilder. There are many other novels on Amazon that feature "flamingo" in the title.

Turner Art Deco Pink Flamingos

Who or what is Turner?

Art deco pink flamingo prints and mirrors have been credited to an artist "Turner" due to the copyright notice on these pieces. As popular as these items are, no reference to this artist turns up in search results. A Wall Street Journal article refers to a defunct "Turner Company" from Chicago. Can anyone solve this mystery?

Note: These hard-to-find Turner prints are cropping up on craigslist and ebay. Beware when purchasing vintage Turner pink flamingo art prints. New ones are now being sold at an art print online store.

Great Lens! I remember the souvenirs and lawn ornaments from my childhood. Years ago when I turned 40, my friends decorated my front lawn with 40 of the plastic pink birdies along with a tacky sign announcing to the world that I was celebrating a milestone birthday. It was great fun!

Well, I voted lawn ornaments because my Mom had two, but she also had a Turner mirror! For years she had a Christmas collage over it and brought it out for the holidays. Sadly, she gave it away to a cast off's group.

5***** on this one.

And! I am glad to find out that the original lawn ornament is preserved.
