St Mary's Thistle, 'silybum marianum' also know as Milk Thistle is one of the main herbs used in alternative medicine to aid the liver.
The use of St Mary's Thistle dates back to as early as the century AD23-79 when it was widely used all those years ago as a liver protector.
This herb is still used to this day to help in liver recovery and is mostly used in alternative medicine as a liver tonic to help support and regenerate the liver.

St Mary's Thistle - 'The Blessed Thistle'
St Mary's Thistle is a hardy stocking annual plant with a purple, thistle like flower, that flowers though the summer months.The flower head changes from the purple flower into black seed heads with white tufts of hair sprouting out.
The fruit with its ripe seeds are the main part of the plant used as they hold the most of the plants powerful properties but the leaves can also be used as nearly all of this plant is.
St Mary's Thistle is a 'bitters', a diuretic herb, with a regenerative tonic effect on the liver cells, stimulating the flow of bile.
This herb is often used by nursing mothers to stimulate milk flow and increase lactation.

St Mary's Thistle and Your Skin!
St Mary's Thistle is added to many moisturisers for its healing properties as it is said to soften rough dry skin.It is used to heal problematic skin as it is rich in antioxidants and can be taken in tablet form or as a tea.
Regular use of Milk Thistle tea is said benefit the state of the skin giving it a soft healthy glow.
The Tea:
Pour boiling water over two tablespoons of crushed seeds.
Steep for 10 -15 mins
Add one teaspoon of peppermint leaves to the mixture.
The peppermint helps the effectiveness of the milk thistle and also makes the tea taste better
Drink once or twice daily.
With any herbal product and especially ones that you have never used before it is wise to ask a health specialist at a health food outlet to see if you are sorted to the product.

- I think I know this thing called St Mary's Thistle. It's hard to get at, so the prepared products like thistle tea would be better for me. At my age, I need all the help I can get!
