The Birth of Thomas The Tank Engine Toys
Thomas the Tank Engine is now over 50 years old. Reverend Wilbert Awdry first came up with the idea as a way of entertaining his young son Christopher as he recovered from scarlet fever. Christopher loved the stories his father told, and asked to hear them again and again. Reverend Awdry added to the story telling by drawing pictures of a row of steam locomotives standing in an engine shed with a human face and expression on each locomotive's smokebox door. Enthused about the characters, Christopher continued to ask his father to tell more stories, and asked the names of the engines in the pictures. For consistency Reverend Awdry started noting his stories on scraps of paper that he had to hand. In no time there were around 100 short stories. Mrs Awdry insisted that the child friendly morals not go to waste, and so Edmund Ward, a small publisher known through the family, was sent the stories. In 1945 the first book of many in The Railway Series was published, and they are still being published today.

How The Thomas Stories Began.
The response was "Because Edward is old and tired and he hasn't been out in a long time." The story continued and 'Edward's Day Out' was born. Thomas the tank engine originally took family's to the coast for their holidays, and Trevor the tractor was always around to help when an engine was stuck. In time 'people' were added to the fictional story, such as Sir Topham Hatt as the Fatt Controller, and before the real steam railways of England were finally put to rest, a safe location was established in the form of The Island of Sodor.
Will Thomas live forever?
After writing 26 books, Rev. Awdry chose to stop writing the delightful stories of Thomas and his friends, and in 1984 his stories started appearing on out TV screens. However Christopher Awdry, now grown, decided that the series should continue, and started writing short adventures for 'the really useful engines' to tell his own son. Who knows if he in turn will take on the family tradition of Thomas and friends?

Thomas In The Railway Series
Although Thomas became the most popular character in The Railway Series, He didn't actually feature in the first book, The Three Railway Engines. Thomas's introduction into the Raliway Series wasn't until the first story in book two. Thomas came to life in the first three stories in book 2 taking familys on holiday, but longed for more important jobs such as pulling the express train like Gordon; however, his lack of experience prevented this. In the fourth story, "Thomas and the Breakdown Train", Thomas rescues James and is rewarded with his own branch line. Thomas is generally depicted with a cheeky and even self-important personality. He believes that he should be more respected by the others, and he gets annoyed when he does not receive this respect. However, Percy and Toby are more than capable of standing up to him, and Annie and Clarabel often rebuke him. TV Series
Thomas' personality in the TV series was faithful to the character of the books. However in the eighth series, there were some slight modifications made. Thomas no longer appears to be limited to his branch line and now works all over Sodor. These slight changes in his personality and duties are probabbly a result of his "star" status being the most popular character in the series. Thomas's TV appearances were the work of Britt Allcroft, and the first stories (series 1-7) were all produced by her original company. The first series of 26 stories were aired in September 1984 on the ITV Network in the UK, with the famous Beatles drummer Ringo Starr as the storyteller. Storytellers since then have been Michael Angelis in the UK version and George Carlin and Alec Baldwin in the US version

- Doing some research for an early lens, I came upon Thomas the Tank and was truly amazed to learn of some "made in Hungary" TTT toys! Pretty amazing -- such a cute and inspiring engine!

- Oh cute as can be toys for the kiddos. I was looking on Amazon and saw some Thomas the Tank Russian Nesting Stacking Dolls with the cute engines on them. Take a look, maybe you would want to add them on this lens. ~ Happy Holidays to you and the loved ones.

- Thomas toys are quite popular with little boys - I have a close friend of mine who has all these cute little trains and I spent a lot of time with him when I got visit them, so I've learned a thing or two about them.

- I've loved Thomas the Tank Engine as long as I can remember, and my baby's first train toy was a Thomas one too. One awesome thing are Thomas and Friends duplo sets - I should probably get hold of one for Helena...

- was (unbelievably) first introduced to Thomas the Train toys and books when my 8-year-old grandson was born. Ryan has been 'train-crazy' all his life, and Thomas the Tank Engine is his very favorite. Over the years I've bought many a 'Thomas' item for him. In addition, Ryan has twice participated in a 'Day Out with Thomas' train ride. Today he is on to model railroading with his dad, but he still has a bunch of 'Thomas' items in his house.
I had NO idea Thomas the tank engine was over 50 years old. The story behind the origin of Thomas was also very charming. I was really delighted to read about it. A delightful lens. Well done.

- Ah... all three of my kids (28, 12 and 9) loved Thomas, particularly our youngest. She still has a lovely collection of diecast engines around (I must sneak them onto eBay!). Great lens!
