Thomas Wilmer Dewing (American, 1851-1938)
Thomas Wilmer Dewing was born in Boston in 1851. During the early years of his career he worked as a lithographer and portrait painter but desiring to further his education, in 1876 traveled to Europe where he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris. Dewing returned to the States to work in New York and Boston, opening a studio in New York and teaching at the Art Student's League.

Thomas Dewing married artist Maria Oakey. He spent summers in New Hampshire along with a group of fellow artists dedicated to the pursuit of beauty where he began painting the women in interiors work for which he is best known. Dewing received several honors during his lifetime, in 1888 he was elected full member of the National Academy of Design and in 1901 was awarded a gold medal at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition. Dewing usually worked from models which he called "merely suggestions". Thomas Wilmer Dewing died in 1938.
