Thor, Norse god of Thunder, the Comic
In the 1960's, Thor came to Marvel Comics for a job. It seems things had gotten boring over the centuries hanging out in Asgard.
Stan Lee of Marvel Comics wrote a script specifically for Thor in issue #83 Journey into Mystery in August, 1962. He played the part so well that he continued to be a star at Marvel. The script was based loosely on Thor's real life abilities, but being the private person that he is, he didn't want the paparazzi at his door day and night, so they made sure there would be no "tell all" books and kept his private life just that.
Though Stan Lee was no longer writing Thor's lines, he was still creating the plots. It seems Stan Lee's brother Larry Lieber was better able to handle the star's on and off set tantrums, therefore was given the line writing for him also. The series began a long run that has lasted thus far to issue #600, January 2009.
Thor, Norse god of Thunder, the Movie
In May 2011, the Norse god will have a movie tribute based upon his Marvel Comics hero. After seeing all of his former Super Friends stars getting movie deals for themselves, Thor was very happy when he was approached and told that 2011 would be his year.
Thor was even able to help choose the star that would play his character in the film. After months of testing and screening, there was a general consensus that the best guy for the job would be an Aussie born actor.

About Thor's Movie Character

As you have probably already guessed, Thor is not a small man and he is getting on up there in years, though I cannot say how many.
For his female fans and the Tiger Beat crew, I was able to acquire these stats on him:
Height 6'6"
Weight 640 lbs
Eyes Blue
Hair Blond
(WOW! What a man!)
I swore an oath not to write a "tell-all" lens about him, but I was provided this information by insiders at Marvel Comics.
Powers
As the son of Odin and Gaea, Thor's strength, endurance and resistance to injury are greater than the vast majority of his superhuman race. He is extremely long-lived (though not completely immune to aging), immune to conventional disease, and highly resistant to injury. His flesh and bones are several times denser than a human's.
As Lord of Asgard, Thor possesses the Odinforce, which enables him to tap into the near-infinite resources of cosmic and mystical, enhancing all of his abilities. With the vast magical power of the Odinforce, Thor was able to even dent Captain America's shield with Mjolnir.
Abilities
Thor is trained in the arts of war, being a superbly skilled warrior, highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, and hammer throwing.
Weapons
Thor wields Mjolnir, a hammer forged from uru metal. Mjolnir is virtually unbreakable, and allows Thor to command the powers of the storm, causing rain, thunder and lightning. Thor can channel the storm's fury into devastating blasts of energy that can destroy even secondary Adamantium. He can also channel his godly energies through Mjolnir into blasts so powerful that they can slay even immortals. Mjolnir can absorb other energies into itself, which Thor can then release.
Paraphernalia
Thor also possesses the Belt of Strength that doubles his strength, but weakens him after its use; a pair of iron gauntlets to protect him when unleashing Mjolnir's most powerful energies; and a chariot drawn by two goats, Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder.

The Challenge of Thor

The Challenge of Thor
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I am the God Thor,
I am the War God,
I am the Thunderer!
Here in my Northland,
My fastness and fortress,
Reign I forever!
Here amid icebergs
Rule I the nations;
This is my hammer,
Miƶlner the mighty;
Giants and sorcerers
Cannot withstand it!
These are the gauntlets
Wherewith I wield it,
And hurl it afar off;
This is my girdle;
Whenever I brace it,
Strength is redoubled!
The light thou beholdest
Stream through the heavens,
In flashes of crimson,
Is but my red beard
Blown by the night-wind,
Affrighting the nations!
Jove is my brother;
Mine eyes are the lightning;
The wheels of my chariot
Roll in the thunder,
The blows of my hammer
Ring in the earthquake!
Force rules the world still,
Has ruled it, shall rule it;
Meekness is weakness,
Strength is triumphant,
Over the whole earth
Still is it Thor's Day!
Thou art a God too,
O Galilean!
And thus singled-handed
Unto the combat,
Gauntlet or Gospel,
Here I defy thee!

A Short History of Thor
From Marvel Comics

Ages ago, Odin, lord of the gods of Asgard, desired a child of both Asgard and Midgard (Earth), and therefore sought out and wooed Gaea, the eldest goddess of the Earth. Gaea gave birth to Thor in a small cave in Norway, and Odin took him to be raised in Asgard by his wife, Frigga.
The young Thor grew up alongside his step-brother Loki, who was always jealous of Thor, the favored son. Thor excelled in power and popularity, and on his eighth birthday, Odin had the hammer Mjolnir created, enchanting it with powerful magic. He decreed that Mjolnir would be presented to Thor when he had been proven a worthy warrior, and Thor spent the next several years training and performing heroic deeds. Indeed, eight years later, Odin gave the hammer to Thor, declaring him to be the greatest warrior in Asgard.
Thor traveled to Earth for the first time in the Ninth Century A.D., in response to his worship among the Vikings. Thor reveled in his worship, leading many in battle and extolling the way of the warrior. Years later, a set of Vikings killed innocent inhabitants of a Christian monastery in Thor's name. In shock and disillusion, Thor cut himself off from his worshippers and returned to Asgard. The Asgardian religion would never be as fervent, eventually dying out completely over the centuries.

- The only thing I knew about The Thor comic prior to this was its mention in "Adventures In Babysitting." I have no idea why I would remember such trivia.
