Rebuilding Lusk Ranch after Wild Fires

April 9, 2009 killed 11 horses in training

The North Texas Wildfires (as they have been named) wiped out only about 20 acres of Lusk Ranch when they blew threw Montague County on Thursday, April 9, 2009 but it was the wrong 20 acres. The fires flew across FM 1816, across the race track, exploded through the metal barn, two storage trailers, then the outside barn. We had 6 horses in training in the metal barn, where we were told they went instantly and did not suffer. There were 4 horses in training in the outside barn, we hope they went as quickly. The fires then went down our fence line where most of our equipment was stored. That is where we lost 2 horse trailers, a truck, a boat, misc. tractor attachments, and other equipment. The fire then went on to explode our well house, which had a water storage tank but also all of our holiday decorations and more recently moved there, all of John's recently deceased parents important estate papers! Yikes!! From there the fire moved down through pastures and to where our wonderful stallion, Grande's Grandslam, was in the stud barn. We believe he freaked with the fire and instead of standing out in the pen, he ran into his stall where the stall walls & roof collapased on him. April is the middle of breeding season. John & Juan breed a mare to Slam the morning of the fire. We pray that she keeps & foals the baby.
Keep up with us on rebuilding after the fires. After, almost 5 months, we finally got 10 stalls back up and usable the end of September. It's amazing how much you are told after a diaster such as this that there will be help for you, but we have received no assistance from anywhere. I'm amazed at the state of our Government!

2 year old is taught to ride

Juan and Rob learn to ropes...

Rob has been here 10 days today. Prior to arriving at Lusk Ranch, he had never even been on a walker. Today, Juan rode him around the round pen for little bit then out the gate and down the driveway. He went on to ride him in the back pasture (where the mares and babies are) where we have a plowed one mile track and a large hill that he went up and down.
It's amazing how Juan is so patient with each horse and their unique personalities and attitudes.

Talula Mula works at Old Trinity

Talula Mula works in the morning

Old Trinity Meadows Race Track

Even with a 1/2 mile training track here at the Ranch, it's good to haul the horses in training to other tracks to get them use to other horses, tracks, etc. Talula Mula is a Maiden but has raced before. We took Mula and Southpaw Saint to the Old Trinity Meadows Race Track in Willow Park, Texas (Weatherford). This particular day was a Saturday which happens to be "match" day at the race track. Very interesting and busy day in the old haul in barn. Lots of people, horses and other things all around.
We had people watching both Mula and Southpaw from the time we unloaded them and put them in a stall. A few of them even followed us to the race track to watch Juan take her around the track. She worked 3/8ths of a mile at :38.16, When we got back to the barns, there were several of them that had lots of questions to Juan (the majority of people there that morning were Hispanic) about Mula. Most of the other horses there that morning were Quarter Horses. Definite differnce in the look of our Mula and the other Quarter Horses.
