It held the #1 spot at the movie box office it's first two weekends in the US, quickly earning over $100 million in attendance revenue.
The History of 300
from history to graphic novel to movie
The story of 300 is a fantastical retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, which took place around 480 B.C. A three-hundred man force of Spartans is reputed to have held off a massive invading Persian force many times their own numbers, supposedly inspiring the rest of Greece to unite over their sacrifice, thus giving birth to democracy.Frank Miller saw the movie "The 300 Spartans" as a kid and it really stuck with him. He did further research and produced 300 in 1998.
Miller's graphic novel was able to tell the story and utilize whatever stylistic ways and means that author Miller wanted. As a movie 300 was made using the latest in CGI effects. Director by Zack Snyder filmed the actors entirely on special green-screen sets and then all the backgrounds and lighting effects were rendered and produced entirely using sophisticated computer graphics.

body by Sparta... or is it?
- The 300 Workout: Can You Handle It?
- The training regimen that whipped actors of the movie 300 into fighting shape may be too much for most of us.
- Frank Miller movie 300 actor training - The 300 Workout
- Not your average workout: Tire flipping, jumping, sprints with a jumpstretch band, runs with kettlebells, turkish get ups with kettlebells, medicine ball throwing, kipping pullups, bear crawls, tuck sits on gymnastics rings, barbell thrusters. Real, oldschool, brutal - full body movements.

- Gym Jones - Knowledge - "300"
- Buzz about the movie "300" increases in volume as its release date approaches. Because we were responsible for the fitness and appearance of the barely-clothed protagonists we are fielding calls regarding the training undertaken by cast and stunt crew. Since it was a Hollywood gig assumptions are made about the preparation, with a 50-50 split between accuracy and utter madness. The following explanation should help to rectify the more erroneous ideas about what actually happened.
- BUTLER LEFT CRIPPLED BY MOVIE TRAINING
- Scottish actor GERARD BUTLER suffered for his art shooting new movie 300 because the intense work-outs he undertook to buff up his body later left him in torture.

- Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite.
- 300 (comic book) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- 300 is a graphic novel, written and illustrated by Frank Miller with painted colors by Lynn Varley. It depicts the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from the perspective of Leonidas I, king of Sparta. The comic, however, takes great liberties in its narrative, for example depicting Xerxes I of Persia as a bald black man with piercings and the traitor Ephialtes of Trachis as a hunchback. The comic was particularly inspired by the 1962 film, The 300 Spartans, a movie that Miller watched as a young boy.

The actual heroism of those who stood (and ultimately died) with Leonidis helped shape the course of Western Civilization, allowing the Greek city states time to organize an army which repelled the Persians. I'll be honest... just the descriptions of ripped and rippling man flesh from advance reviews had me psyched to see this film.I've got a friend who makes computer-generated worlds for a hobby, and I've developed a taste for what we refer to as "render movies," where a ton of the visuals are generated by computer.
First off.... WOW! This movie is intense, an almost-unceasing series of battle scenes and it's gorgeous no matter how gory it gets. I've seen shots of the production and some video blogs from the director and cast and if I didn't know this entire thing had been shot on a green-screen soundstage, I never would have guessed.
The whole film really captures the look and character of the images and light found in Miller's artwork. Everything has a shaded-toned look to it, with even a sunny sky having a cast of haze and sepia. Nothing gets too crisp or bright and yet everything in the foreground is intensely in focus. The battle scenes are just amazing, with some of the most realistic slaughters I've ever seen. Spurts of blood fly everywhere, you see limbs hacked right off and people are clearly being shown run through with spears.
I liked Gerard Butler as King Leonidas. I hope this movie helps make him better-known to American movie audiences, as he's really a good actor. I'm not sure I really liked having Delios provide an overall narration, but he was played by one of my favorite Aussie actors, David Wenham. Or as my father put it, "hey, is that Boromir's brother?"... yes, Dad, it is. Rodrigo Santoro (from the tv show "Lost") was really delicious as the Persian "god-king" Xerxes, but I had one complaint: in a movie full of amazing special effects, the faux facial piercings still looked glued-on.
The story is pretty-straightforward. The Persians come to conquer the Spartans, the Spartans resist and loose the battle but not the war. It's interesting how the current political climate has stirred up a lot of talk about the themes of this movie, but I think that's more from people projecting their interpretations on the movie more than a meaning assigned by the filmmakers.
If you like battles and special effects or really buff guys in leather briefs, it's all tentacles up for this one!

Just saw this movie and I didn't think I was going to like it but it definitely draws you in. Beautiful like a moving painting. I liked the relationship between Leonidis and his wife. My only objection - everytime someone was beheaded their head would amazingly fly up into the air in slow-mo... Posted August 10, 2007 |
