Who Is Robert Thurman?

Robert Thurman teaches at Columbia University Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion. Robert is the father of actress Uma Thurman. He was one of the earliest Westerners to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama and they have become life-long friends. Thurman has translated many Tibetan texts. He is also President of Tibet House in New York City, which he founded with Richard Gere. He is one of the most famous and respected Buddhist scholars, writers and thinkers in the world.

The New York Times has referred to Thurman as "The Dalai Lama's man in America" and Time magazine has named him one of the "25 Most Influential Americans."

What is Tibet House?

Robert Thurman is regarded as the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism, having been a major force in the widespread introduction of Tibetan culture and religion to the west. Thurman became the first American ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, in 1962. Later he shifted from strict monasticism to the more conventional lifestyle of an academic.

Tibet House in New York City was created by him for the purpose of promoting and preserving Tibetan culture by serving as both a cultural center and an online global resource for those interested in Tibetan civilization. The Cultural Center's activities include exhibits, print publications and media productions. It serves as a central meeting place for the local Tibetan community to hold programs and events.

Why the Dalai Lama Matters

JUST RELEASED This is Thurman's most recent book.

"No one has worked harder to bring Tibet, Tibetan Buddhism, and the special power of the Dalai Lama to American audiences than Robert Thurman. Long may he write and, as in this latest work, bring learning and spirit, great vigor, and close knowledge together."- Pico Iyer

"I could not put this book down. I found it powerfully inspiriting to imagine a positive alternative to the sixty-yearlong tragedy wrought by China in Tibet. As Robert Thurman shows us, by reversing its colonialist cultural genocide in Tibet (and so inspiring a reversal of the murderous policies of the regimes in Myanmar and Sudan), China could truly emerge as a responsible world power and take its place within the moral community of nations."- Mia Farrow, actor, activist, and humanitarian

The Candle for Tibet initiative is a most wonderful thing, fitting in with the Tibetan tradition of lighting votive lamps in long rows in temples and in special butter lamp houses outside.

We seem powerless to ameliorate conditions on the ground in the present crisis moment.

This peaceful prayer vigil, since it focuses the minds of many millions on the different sufferings of tormented and tormentor alike, is a powerful way to intervene. And it does not preclude anything else we can think of and do further on.

I hope everyone who reads this will join in this important effort.

--Robert Thurman, President, Tibet House US
