Songs of the Soul
Tibetan Singing Bowls are often seen in Buddhist meditation centers and retreats, but you may have seen one during a yoga class, at a musical event, or even at a friends home. The heavy, beautiful bowls are more than gorgeous decoration or a musical instrument - they produce sounds of calm, peace and healing!
Origin of the Tibetan Singing Bowl
Hand-hammered Sacred Objects of Tibet
The singing bowl originated in Tibet, deep in the mountains of the Himalayas. They have quite an array of sizes and shapes to produce different sounds.Unfortunately, after the Chinese occupation of Tibet in the 1950s most of the information and rituals of the singing bowls has been lost.
Singing bowls are produced in two factories in Derge where the metal is hand-hammered into the proper shape. "Singing bowls are unique because they are multiphonic instruments, producing multiple harmonic overtones at the same time." The multi-tones are due to the bowls being made up of an alloy of metals consisting of 5 to 12 different metals.
"Legends state that one of these metals is meteorite iron. It has been hypothesized that this use of meteorite iron may be one of the reasons why Tibetan bowls have such amazing sounds."

The Power of Sound
The Transformative Ability of Vibrational Frequencies
Mantra chanting, chimes, gongs, and singing bowls have all been used for their healing and transformative affects, but how can sound transform an aspect on my life? Vibration. Not a single object around us is actually "still," everything is alive with its own vibratory frequency. Sound waves, which are also vibrations, permeate everything within range. Just like the waves from this tuning fork expand further away from the fork. The waves of the sound touches the subtle vibration wave of your cells and produces a combined effect. The interaction between sound, our bodies, energy fields, and everything around us produces change even it is very subtle. Have you listened to a beautiful piece of music and wept? Has your favorite upbeat music made you want to get up and move? Often I hear music that seems to touch the deepest core of me. It is all the vibration of sound.
Singing bowls are designed to produce a sound that creates a certain reaction in the cells of the body and its energy flow (Shakti / Prana). Different bowls produce a unique sound and effect. This is why singing bowls are used for healing and in meditation to calm the mind.
