Chanting and the Body

The following is a quote from the book titled:
Chanting - Discovering Spirit in Sound
. It comes with an enclosed CD of chanting.

"I believe that one of the reasons chanting has such a powerful effect on practitioners is because it affects us physically as well as spiritually. Our breathing is fundamental to the way we feel in our body, and the repetitive nature of chanting induces us to breathe deeper, slower, and more thythmically. The sound vibrations caused by making vocal sounds resonate throughout our bodies - as though we were being massaged from the inside out. Our brain-wave patterns are measurably altered, evoking states of relaxation, or heightened creative energy. Our muscle tension relaxes and skin temperature changes; our blood pressure and heart rate go down. A regular practice of chanting can elicit the relaxation response, reduce stress, sharpen mental clarity, open and expand all of our senses, and help support our overall health and wellness."

I would like to invite any of you readers who are Sound Healers to join my Sound Therapy group. Of course, that means you will have to create a Squidoo lens to add to the group, but why not it's free and we'd love to have you.

According to Thomas Moore in his book The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life:

"Charm" is a form of carmen, a song, adding the idea of voice and music, the "chant" in enchantment. Deep in enchantment is the experience of being lured into reverie, dreamland, by the musical charms of the enchanter."

Both Hindus and Buddhists Chant Om

The Five Wisdoms and the kayas are represented in the seed syllable OM. Here is how they break down:

A - dharmakaya - wisdom of emptiness

Naro - sambhogakaya - mirror-like wisdom

Crescent moon - nirmanakaya - discriminating wisdom

Tigle - essential kaya - wisdom of equanimity

a chung - embodiment of bodhicitta - all-accomplishing wisdom

You can order your own pendant for a necklace or get a gemstone and terra-cotta bead bracelet here.

This Lens Focuses on Tibetan Chants

"From the perspective of Eastern thought, chanting is a powerful vehicle for freeing up the vital energy of the body-mind - called chi, prana, or kundalinia - by helping to infuse every system, organ and cell of our body with life force."

OVERTONE CHANTING

Overtone chanting is sometimes called overtone singing, overtoning, harmonic singing, harmonic chanting, khöömii, höömii and throat singing.

Overtone chanting makes audible the natural harmonic spectrum of the voice in its pure rainbow colours, so that unearthly, angelic and bell-like tones are heard floating above the deep voices of the chanters. It is performed in Tibet and Mongolia.

It is a form of chanting on one note where the partials- constituent parts (overtones or harmonics) are selectively amplified by changing the shape of the resonant cavities of the mouth, larynx and pharynx. These notes are always present in any note, but while they color the note and give it its quality they are usually inaudible.

This is a form of chanting traditionally found only in Central Asia - in Mongolia, Tuva and Tibet. In Mongolia and Tuva (Siberia), it is called khöömii (khoomei, höömii or xöömii) which means throat singing. In Tibet, in a few Tantric Colleges only, it is done by the monks as part of ceremonial practice.

Tibetan Chant Video

This DVD contains Tibetan chants accompanying animated images of 3 Buddhas: Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) the Buddha of Compassion, Buddha Sakhyamuni the historic founder of Buddhism and Mahakala (six-armed black Mahakala) the Protector.

The music and animated images do give a wonderful ambience for anyone practicing the Dharma. Just pop it in, and either use it as a meditation focus or just to create a more contemplative atmosphere in the room.

Great lens! Thank you for stopping by my lense, dnahealing, it was in looking at your comments that I found this lense and your sound therapy group. My husband and I are traditional Native American singers, singing ancient healing songs in much the same tradition as Tibetan chants. So thank you for inspiring the connection and a great upcoming lense : )
