The World of Tibetan: Religious, Linguistic, and Cultural Enigma

The struggle for Tibet's political freedom and the fame of the Dalai Lama, often obscures many basic facts about the Tibetan language and Tibet.

The Tibetan language is a member of the Tibeto-Burman sub-group of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages. Tibetan is most closely related to Burmese.

The Tibetan alphabet is based on the Sanskrit alphabet and dates to the 7th century C.E.

Basic Facts about the Tibetan Language 

Approximately, 4.5 million people speak Tibetan as their first language. A further 1 million speakers use it as their second language.

Of these speakers, approximately 1 million people are found in Tibet. Another 3 million speakers are found in the Chinese provinces of Szechwan, Tsinghai, and Kansu.

Tibetan Festivals 

Classical Tibetan culture is centered on Lamaism which is a developed form of Buddhism. Lamaism is the religion of the overwhelming majority of the population.

In Tibet, there are many festivals throughout the year. Dancing monks can be seen in the Year End Festival which occurs in the February-March period.

The New Year Festival is a colorful week of activities including Tibetan drama, pilgrims making incense offerings and Tibetans dressed in their finest clothes crowding the streets.
