Ticks. Not a bug. Not an insect. An Arachnid!
When folks and their pets venture into the meadows and forests of our parks and open areas for recreation they may be returning home with unwanted "guests" -- the Ticks
Almost any forested or grassy area in the world will have ticks.
Ticks are members of the arachnid family--more related to spiders and scorpions than to insects and bugs.
One of the identifying features of an arachnid is the presence of 8 legs. Ticks have 8 legs.
Ticks are opportunistic eaters. They eat blood. When an animal (human or otherwise) brushes close to where the tick is hiding, the tick can latch on to its new host and start its dinner.

Other Than The Bite--The Main Tick Risks!
Many nasty diseases are spread by ticks. Just one bite will do it.
Lyme Disease
This illness has gotten a lot more attention lately, now that President Bush was diagnosed with it. Its symptoms resemble arthritis--and it is a multisystem and multistage infection caused by a spirochete bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. Early infection involves a skin rash that is seen a few days after the tick bite. As the bacteria spread, a few weeks later, skin lesions (sores) can develop, as can meningitis, artery blockage, and various forms of arthritis (inflamations). There can be a combination of joint, heart, and nervous-system affects that can be hard to diagnose. The infection can persist for many years after the first exposure... medical attention should be urgently obtained.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
This illness can be very severe and will often require hospitalization. The tick-transmitted bacteria, Rickettsia rickettsii, causes a rash with fever--through infecting the cells lining the blood vessels. It can eventually affect the repiratory system, the central nervous system, gastrointestinal system (stomach/intestines), and/or renal system (kidneys). Long-term problems following a severe infection include paralysis of extremities that can lead to gangrene, which then requires amputation of fingers, toes, or arms and legs; hearing loss; loss of bladder or bowel control; and movement and language disorders. It can be fatal if not quickly treated.

More Ways To Remove Ticks!
If you are walking around with a tick, you might not just be nervous!
O'TOM TICK TWISTER
Why is removing a tick correctly so important? Compressing the body of the tick can cause its saliva and gut contents to be squeezed out of the tick and back into the bloodstream of the host. Infective organisms can be transferred this way. Using fiddly impliments can prolong tick removal and stress the tick. This can cause it to regurgitate its stomach contents along with any infective organisms. DO NOT freeze, burn, or smother the tick with petrolium jelly, alcohol, or other substances, because this will also stress the tick and can cause it to regurgitate. DO NOT scratch off or crush a tick because it can leave bits behind in the skin and spill the saliva and gut contents which can result in infection.

- Very informative. We deal with ticks all the time. There seems to be a new hatching right now. Welcome to the Naturally Native Squids group. Don't forget to add your lens link to the appropriate plexo and vote for it.

- Thanks for doing this. I was going to, but here you are. I will favor and link to.
Never, Never mess with ticks. I have a friend whose life was ruined 15 years ago by lyme's disease. She has at least yearly chemotherapy.
When I found a tick on me, I insisted it be tested, the doctor tried to talk me out of it, but turns out I had Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. That kills!
I am not much for going to doctors unless I am really sick, I don't get flu shots, and am not a hypocondriac, but NEVER MESS WITH TICKS OR TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED.
Thanks again, this is a public service.

- As much as I am fond of most all creatures on some level, those pictures of the blood engorged ticks just creep me out completely.
