Ticks On Dogs - Removing Dog Ticks

Seeing a tick on your dog can be a scary sight. You may not notice at first until it had grown to a size that you can't fail to notice - a blob, with exposed parts lodged into your pets skin. Ticks on dogs not only cause the dog pain or irritation while they feed on its blood, they could also call it through spreading bacteria that causes things like lyme disease. So it is important to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Ticks - What are They?

Infomation about ticks from Wikipedia

Tick is the common name for the small arachnids in superfamily Ixodoidea that, along with other mites, constitute the Acarina. Ticks are ectoparasites (external parasites), living by hematophagy on the blood of mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. Ticks are vectors of a number of diseases, including Lyme disease, Q fever, Colorado tick fever, tularemia, tick-borne relapsing fever, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis and Tick-borne meningoencephalitis, as well as anaplasmosis in cattle and canine jaundice.

Young ticks have six legs, and mature ticks have eight legs. They vary in size and appearance depending on the species.

Dog Tick Removal

Fortunately, it's not difficult to remove ticks on dogs. Removal is a simple 3 stage process.

1. Wear a pair of rubber gloves to avoid contaminating yourself with any bacteria resulting from the extraction.

2. Get a fine pair of tweezers or acquire a tick removal tool

3. Place the tweezers horizontally around the tick and press them as far into the dog's skin as you can in order to grip the tick's head at the furtherrmost contact with the dog's skin. Grip the tick's head and pull the tweezers up to extract it. Be careful not to jerk or twist the tweezers to avoid breaking the tick's body, releasing bacteria and leaving the tick's head stuck in the dog's skin.

It's important to remove a tick as quickly as possible to minimise chance of bacteria leading to an infection in your dog, some types of infection caused by ticks can be fatal. If you don't feel able to remove the tick yourself then take your dog to a vet as soon as possible.
