nasty little devil isn't it ?
Ticks are bloodsuckers and have a small beak andclaws that dig into the host's skin to prevent removal.
They climb up the host to somewhere that cannot be reached and then burrow in.
Ticks come in several varieties according to their age and type. The color varies from pale skin colored to dark brown.They are sometimes hard to spot.
To get rid of ticks and fleas you should use an effective spray or systemic cure like Frontline.

I was quite horrified at the first tick I found - my cute little spaniel puppies caught ticks on the long grass at the island next to the beach. But I didn't see them till the next day - when I found a little tick wandering across MY neck looking for a home !Finding a tick is quite hard - they are very well disguised and look very much like warts or even nipples.
Ticks are quite vicious little beggars and live by burrowing into the pets neck and inserting their beak and sucking the pet's blood till they are full and they then drop off and if indoors they find a crevice to lay eggs and start the whole cycle again.
How did the bugs get onto me ? The puppies sleep on the bed of course ! Frontline was amazing - I couldn't bring myself to do what my neighbour showed me - how to twist the bug anti-clockwise and pull at the same time as I think this often leaves the tick's head under the skin to fester (and I really love my puppies !) However I didn't need to - Frontline when sprayed on to the fur (but avoiding the eyes) worked really quickly and the ticks just dropped off on their own and I swept them up and go rid of them (in the incinerator !) A bonus was that the same spraying got rid of a couple of fleas the little puppy had in residence too !
I got my Frontline spray at the local vet and she showed me how to use it - although it was in fact really easy.
There's also a one drop version that lasts for months when applied to the back of the neck of the animal. Problem is that is quite strong and I have reservations about using it on young puppies.It is essential to keep puppies apart as they must NOT lick the solution off each other's neck.
Deer ticks or Brown Dog Ticks look very much like
papillomas or warts (or sometimes look like nipples)
Symptoms of Lymes disease are a rash starting at the bite and spreading outwards. Other symptoms may include lethargy,stiffness,fever or chills and posibly unsteady walking or balance. If you even suspect that your dog may have Lyme disease consult your vet immediately.
Fleas are much easier to control and any flea spary that's dog-safe usually does the trick.
As with cats though, a flea collar should be very carefully chosen to be safe to your pet. Most Vets sell flea collars and they will advise you on safety for your dog or cat.
If you use the spray version be very careful about spraying close to the animals eyes or mouth.

That was QUITE good advice

A HUGE surprise to me was that ticks can climb out of plastic containers (I used one the size of an ordinary drinking glass).
The next thing is what do you do with it when you have got it...
I dispose of them by pouring gasoline on to them and that kills them instantly.
Then you can flush them away.
Do NOT put live ones into the toilet - as I said the little beggars can climb !
NEVERY squash a tick - it may immediately lay eggs and you will only make matters worse - those eggs either fall into the dogs fur or on to your carpet..

No I don't like handling ticks either...
so a Frontine Spray really does do the job quickly and efficiently . Use it outdoors (you really don't want them to fall off inside the house...) and avoid the puppys eyes and mouth for safety.

We've solved the ticks and fleas with Frontline and that really works.

Your Problems Solved (Mostly) 2 - Bad Breath in Dogs
Dogs do sometimes get bad breath - this is partly what you feed them and partly what they scrounge (I know I have two dustbin dogs - they are never out of the dustbin - I cured that with a padlock and then found the smaller dog reading a book on lockpicking )

I'm sorry but you are just going to have to put up with it .. to a dog its as natural as breathing - and sometimes they just get randy.
Some dog trainers say its a dominance thing but I don't really think doggies are into S&M do you ? If you do then a Gimp mask might be an ideal Xmas gift ....

You need Doggy Diapers (no really they work and there's a hole for the tail and everything ! - well not quite everything or they wouldn't work would they ? )

Dogs get smelly ears in 2 ways (probably more if you have a creative spaniel)
What Dogs think - they LOVE to roll in really smelly stuff the nastier the bettter as far as they are concerned.(Like dead birds or goat poo for instance) They find it attractive and interesting.. sor of canal number 2 aftershave for dogs...
Disinfect and and a foam dishwashing pad will get it off - do it out doors or forever have smelly carpets. (and people will not come in,sniff and say 'You have dogs don't you ' )
Second is much more serious - dogs can either get an accumulation of ear wax (NEVER try to remove this with cotton buds or you will really hurt your doggie) or mites - both of which make their ears smell.

What you need is a shock collar.
Shock collars sound awful but are not that bad really. A mild electric shock stings the dog when it barks and really soon they just don't do it any more (and you can put the old collar back on then)

When I was about 7 years old my parents too me to a sideshow at the Onion Fair - It was a Flea Circus - yes there they were doing the high Jump,pulling a chariot and being a strong Man (Flea rather !) They were quite amazing but I did suspect it was like Michael Bentine's Flea Circus with imaginary fleas,They were real though and I was amazed at how high they can jump !
Fleas are much easier to get rid of than ticks and jump around dogs fur partcularly well (they seem to prefer silky fur).
Almost any insect spray for animals will work on them.Again keep it well away from their eyes and mouth .
Fleas like to hide under collars and around the ears where the pet can't reach them.
Whatever you decide to do, give your pet a bath first and this may dislodge some of the pests.
If your pet is infested with fleas then you also have a different problem as fleas like to jump off the dog or cat and make a home in your carpet or between floorboards or any other crack in the place.
The only solution (and this REALLY works !) Is to hire a steam cleaning machine and steam clean the relevabnt room - walls,carpet and curtaims too.
The steam will remove not only fleas but also their eggs - which otherwise will hatch again in the Spring - bringing a new batch of the little pests.
(The same machine is great for getting rid of moths in carpets by the way) I bought a steam cleaning machine and it has proved very useful.,

Global warming and ticks
This year has been warm and wet here ... and the ticks seem to love it.
Usually ticks are only around in about April/May but this year we are still getting them in late September.
Please remember to give your dogs & cats a spray soon to avoid infections that these little beasts carry (the ticks that is !)

When you get a really stubborn outbreak of ticks you will need something a little stronger to rid your pet of ticks.
Avoid Ticks and Fleas - your puppy will thank you for it !
The best way to avoid ticks and fleas is simply to not take them to places where they'll catch them. There does seem to be a tick season (varies but lasts about 4 to 8 weeks annually) . Your vet should be able to tell you when that is. The places to avoid are anywhere with Long grass, forests,bushy undergrowth or ferns. Ticks love climbing up ferns and similar plants and they then drop down to passing animals and the strange thing is that puppies and dogs particularly don't seem to mind them unless there are a number of them. We however mostly find them really unpleasant and they DO act as carriers for Lyme disease (usually they have been living on deer previously and this disease can endanger your pets life).If yu do visit areas with low growth with your dog then try to bathe him or her in a pond or in the sea before going home as this seems to be unpleasant fotr the ticks and they fall off before they've got a good foothold (have you looked at a photo of a tick ? they have sharp litle feet that dig into the skin...and a beak !)
There is a wire device that I have seen in the UK and Germany that the owner just slips over the ticks body and twists and I found this very efficient.
(Of course you have to have a container ready to dispose of the tick afterwards)
Please note that dogs and puppies can transfer ticks to each other so be careful about your puppy meeting other unknown puppies !
