Tie Me Up

Tie me up! Ties say a lot about a person. What do your ties say about you? Do your ties match your personality? Your clothes? Are they outdated? Are you wearing the right ties? Do you know when to wear a necktie vs a bowtie? Do you know how to tie a tie? How to properly store your ties? Do you know how to get lipstick and other stains off your tie? Are you dressed for success? This lens answers some of the basic questions about ties and includes a How To Tie a Tie chart and video. You can also shop for ties, customize a tie with your own photo, logo or slogan, and purchase tie organizers.

Choosing A Tie

One of the most important things to focus on in choosing a tie is the pattern. There are thousands of different styles and designs and patterns that it can seem overwhelming. One thing to remember is that you can't go wrong with a solid tie (as long as it matches your shirt and coat). If you are in doubt over a certain type of pattern, the best idea is to have no pattern at all.

If you do decide to choose a tie with a pattern, some of the basic designs include stripes and polka-dots and geometric shapes. Others include more outlandish designs that feature logos, cartoon characters and landscapes. Some ties are obviously designed with nothing but fun in mind, like the sports ties for sale on this lens. These types of ties are fun for to promote your favorite sports team or chartoon character, but you may want to think twice about wearing them in the boardroom.

It's also important to think about the material when you choose a tie. It should be strong enough to make a good knot, and this strength typically comes from the lining of coarse fabric that is sewn into the lining of most ties. Silk makes the best kind of tie, but without a good lining, silk ties can be to thin to make credible knots. Ties made from a fabric that blends silk with polyester are also nice. Ties made from wool or cottonare also nice but typically dont wear quite as nicely.

The Necktie

The necktie (or tie) is a long piece of cloth worn around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat. Variants include the bow tie, ascot tie, bolo tie, and the clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear. Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff). Some people wear a tie as normal fashion wear.

The Bowtie

The bow tie is a men's necktie popularly worn with formal attire, such as suits or dinner jackets. It consists of a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner such that the two opposite ends form loops. Ready-tied bow ties are available, in which the distinctive bow is sewn into shape and the band around the neck incorporates a clip. Some "clip-ons" dispense with the band altogether, instead clipping to the collar. The traditional bow tie, consisting of a strip of cloth which the wearer has to tie by hand, may be known as a "self-tie," "tie-to-tie," or "freestyle" bow tie to distinguish it from these.

Bow ties may be made of any fabric material, but most are made from silk, polyester, cotton, or a mixture of fabrics. Some fabrics (e.g., wool) are much less common for bow ties than for ordinary four-in-hand neckties.

The Clip on Tie

The clip-on tie is a bow tie or four-in-hand tie which is permanently tied, with a dimple just below the knot, and which is fixed to the front of the shirt collar by a metal clip. Alternately, the tie can may have a band around the neck fastened with a hook and eye.

The clip-on tie was reportedly invented on December 13, 1928 in Clinton, Iowa.Rightreading. December. Retrieved on May 20, 2007

Lipstick Stained Shirts

Stain your shirt? You don't have to cover it with a tie or throw it away.

To remove lipstick from a shirt, gently dab the lipstick stain with an alcohol swab. Use cold water if you don't have alcohol. Next, apply a handful of clothes detergent and rub into the lipstick blotch with just one finger. Certain detergents are more adept to chase away lipstick stains, as lipstick is oil-based; thus, products that fight grease specifically are ideal. Now your stained shirt is ready to be tossed in the washing machine.

Other options:
Dawn is also great for fighting lipstick stains.
Ammonia and hairspray sometimes do the trick too!
