Heart Breaking in Tiffany

It is really an awful day for Ben. He is too tired to even curse the terrible day. Ben is a lawyer in a law office named Justice. There is an important court hearing in the afternoon. However, his Volvo conks out at the highway and thus he gets late for the count. And bad things never come alone. After apologizing for his late to the judge, Ben searches his briefcase for a piece of essential material that he intends to show in the count while in vain. The fact is Ben forgets the file in his office. Due to Ben's carelessness, the judge angrily ends the count and decides to open it in another day.

Ben goes out the count with his heart down and calls a cab. When he gets home, he finds that there is nobody home. The two sons have arrived hone yet. His wife, who intends to cook in the kitchen, is not there either. Feeling so tired and lonely in the empty house, Ben lies on the sofa and goes into a nap. It is a quite long and sound nap while a sudden phone call breaks the quiet of the house. Ben picks up the phone that from his wife Joanna who is now sitting in a French restaurant with fury. The phone call reminds Ben that today is their wedding anniversary and he is late for the dinner for about an hour. Ben runs out home and takes a cab to the restaurant. However, he does not prepare a gift for Joanna...

On the cab Ben called to the French restaurant La seine, Ben thinks about a justified excuse that can make Joanna less angry. But, no matter what will he explain, the least thing he want to say is the terrible things happen to him for the whole day. Once he goes into the restaurant, he sees Joanna in excellent red dress, seating on the seat that they engaged. And in front of Joanna, there is a delicate box on the table. Ben slowly goes to Joanna and tries to comfort her by tapping her shoulder. However, what's out of Ben's expectation is that Joanna cries out in the quiet restaurant when Ben tries to touch her. Seconds later, she runs out of the restaurant, leaving Ben stands still there. Instead of running after Joanna. Ben sits down and opens the box Joanna left on the table. He opens it, and in the box, there is a pair of cuff button form Tiffany. Ben looks at the cuff button and falls into the memory.

The love story happened when Ben was still a poor student who study in the law college. One morning, withing a set of books in arm and a cup of coffee in hand, Ben went on his way to school. Suddenly, a running brown haired girl ran against Ben and knocked over Ben's coffee. However, the girl didn't stop. Instead, she kept on running, saying "sorry" to Ben at the same time. It's quite a unusual that Ben felt no angry at all in such a circumstance. He indeed wanted to chase after the girl but for telling her that there are coffee drops on her coat while not blaming her. However, the girl disappeared just like a rabbit.

Few days later, when Ben reviewed his work in the café, a girl went to him and tapped his shoulder softly. That's that obtrusive girl named Joanna. She explained that she didn't stop to appologize to Ben because she was late for the appointant with her mom at Tiffany's that day. Then Joanna sat with Ben and they two had a great conversation that Ben fall in love with Joanna. Few weeks later, these two people had already become lovers. Then it came the wedding anniversary of Joanna's parents and thus Joanna invited Ben to attending the anniversary party and intended to introduce Ben to her parents. However, what unexpected was that the party became the everlasting pain for Ben.

On the party day, Ben carefully selected the suit for the anniversary. Though in fact there are few choices for Ben, he picked up the one that he thought would be the best. With a bottom of red wine, Ben went to Joanna's. The party was held in the apartment and the neatly dressed people on the party made Ben felt quite embarrassed. However, when Joanna appeared in front of Ben, it seemed that time was stop as well as the chaos of the outside world. Instead of the casual dress Joanna used in, she wore a red bare-back dress with a piece of star lariat necklace.

After a secondly shock on Joanna's beauty, as the boyfriend of Joanna, Ben was introduced to her parents. Joanna's father - Shane talked to Ben ceremonially. However, under the words Shane spoke, there are something more than politeness. Ben sensed a bit of distain that suggested by Shane. However, Ben would rather comfort himself that it was just a misunderstanding. When Shane talked to Ben, Ben noticed that Shane kept on touching his cuff links. The shining light of the cuff links tingled Ben's eyes and chilled his back. In such an unpleasant mood, Ben stayed until the end of the party. What made Ben more unpleasant is that Joanna didn't make a goodnight phone call as usual.

Joanna didn't call Ben after the party. And as an unvoiced pact, Ben didn't call Joanna neither. He thought that if Joanna want to talk to him, then she would do it and vice versa. Also, to Ben, there's no time left for him to think of what happened between he and Joanna as he was at the graduation time then. The experience in the editorial department in college as well as his field work enabled him to find a very good job in a law office named Justice. Time flies and that's how the three months passed. Ben had alrady convinced himself that there's no any hope for him and Joanna.

In a rainy morning, the phone rang. It's Joanna who said that she wanted to meet Ben. On hearing this, Ben eagerly ask when and where shall they meet. "now, at your door", Joanna answered. Without shoes, Ben jumped up from his bed and run to the door. On opening the door, Ben found a gaunt and wet Joanna there. What more noticable was a small trunk beside Joanna. Ben understood immediately and then he put Joanna into his arms. From then on, there were one more person in Ben's small department.

Due to the excellent performance in college, Ben got scholarship when he was at school. That's why unlike many of his classmates, Ben didn't have to pay back loans. What's more, he did well in Justice and what he earned is enough for his living. Ben planed that after the graduation of Joanna next year, he would marry her.

While to Joanna, she wanted to start a design workshop of her own. However, everything is difficult at its start. Despite of the talent for designing, Joanna had to find a sponsor who would invest on her workshop.

From that rainy morning on, Ben made up his mind that he would bring a comfortable life to Joanna and thus he could feel proud and elated when facing Joanna's parents. Ben wanted to live a forever life with Joanna, and he indeed lived her. However, once he thought about that, he reminded the cuff links that Shane wore.

Finally, Joanna will finish her study in costume designing institute and graduate. Fortunately, her graduated design wins not only the praise of her teachers but also the favorite of a businessman. From this anonymous businessman, Joanna get a great amount of money for preparing of her personal designing workshop.

Before her graduate ceremony, she calls her father, hoping that her parents can attend the ceremony. However, the phone is picked by the secretary of her father, thus Joanna has no idea that whether her parents will come.

On the ceremony day, Ben goes to Joanna's institute very early. He also expects that Joanna's parents can come as he is unwilling to say the disappointed face of Joanna. However, out of Joanna and Ben's expectation, the parents do not show till the end of the ceremony.

After the end of the ceremony, Ben asks Joanna to take pictures and when they step out the auditorium, they find that Joanna's parents are just standing there, holding flowers.

Joanna runs to them and hugs them separately. At the same time, when Ben sees the running Joanna, a illusion undergoes in Ben's mind that Joanna is running away from his life.

Ben intended to celebrate the graduation of Joanna with her alone while the show up of Joanna's parents no doubt enables the plan. Thus these four people go to the restaurant "La seine". It's a restaurant full of stories. Years ago, Joanna's mother once was a waitress here and the restaurant is also where she met Shane and engaged with him. From a early ago on, Joanna went to this restaurant with her parents.

After the wedding anniversary party, Ben bears a grudge against Joanna's parents, especially Shane. On their way to the restaurant, Ben seldom has a talk with them. And when these four have seats in the restaurant, Shane takes a delicate little box, put it on the table, and push it in front of Ben. Surprised at the scene, Ben gets the box and opens it slowly. Guess what? A Tiffany ring in it!

After giving the Tiffany ring to Ben, Shane tells Ben that he knows quite well about the love between Ben and Joanna. Though at the very first, he objects the relationship because of the gap of their social status, now he approves it as he doesn't want to lose his daughter. That's the reason for buying the ring. Ben is shocked by Shane's words and the ring, and what follows the astonishment is a joy for blessing given by Joanna's parents.

Who is the happiest one? Of course it's Joanna. From the day she left the home on, Joanna is annoyed by the disapproval of her parents. What's out of her expectation is that on her graduation date, her father offers her such a big "surprise".

Anita asks Ben to put Joanna in ring while Joanna jokes that her father should give her a ring with more unique design. No doubt, the ring is best starters. The dinner thus goes on in a harmonious environment.

After the graduation, Joanna put all of her effort into the preparation of her design workshop. The workshop locates in a two - floor apartment that near Ben's apartment. Now, it's the busiest and happiest time to Joanna as she has to take care of the house decoration as well as the design her new works, hoping that the works this time make her one of the most promising young designer.

Ben also works well in the law office, though he is still a freshman there, he is popular with his boss by his comprehension on law and hardworking. Thus his boss always gives some small cases to Ben.

Ben thinks that all things go on smoothly and in such a circumstance, he wants to marry Joanna and form their family. Ben was grown up in a single parent family and is desirous to have his own family.

Ben takes for granted that Joanna and he are doomed to be together, especially when Joanna's parents take approval to their relationship. In the circumstance that their lives are on the track, Ben thinks that it's time for holding their wedding ceremony.

To give a formal proposal, Ben ends his work early one day and books seats in La seine. He takes flowers to the restaurant and gives them to the waiter, hoping that they can be given to Joanna during the dinner and surprising her. Also, he prepares a delicate Pandora bangle to Joanna as she already has a wedding ring. Ben makes a phone call to Joanna who is busy in decorating her workshop and invites her for dinner.

However, Joanna thinks that it's only an ordinary dinner and takes little attention to the appointment. She is immersed in the millions of tiny things of the decoration and when she realized that she is late for the dinner, an hour has already passed.

When Joanna arrives at La seine, she find that Ben is still there, seeming a little bit unhappy. After a while, waiter takes the flowers to Joanna and Ben explains his motivation to Joanna. However, in stand of the happiness and joy, Joanna says nothing and remains silence.

Unexpectedly, Joanna reject Ben's proposal. She feels confused that why Ben is so pressing to get married. Joanna feels satisfactory at their relationship, especially after her parents have said yes to it. Millions of tiny things of the workshop fulfill Joanna's mind and there is no space for her to think about marriage. Despite of the decoration of workshop, Joanna is busy in designing dresses for the new season. Joanna thinks that Ben doesn't take her into consideration. He wants to get married because he lacks security and wants a family. On think of this, Joanna suddenly feels quite sad. She thinks that Ben doesn't trust in her and her love.
