How climate change is impacting the Bengal tiger

With a wild population of around 1,850, the Bengal (Indian) tiger is the most numerous of all tiger subspecies. However, the needs of a rapidly growing human population are pushing the tiger out of its natural habitat, which leads to increasing conflicts between humans and these beautiful animals.
As with all tigers, the survival of the Bengal tiger is threatened by poaching.

The Siberian tiger is also known as the Amur tiger. 70 years ago the Siberian tiger was almost extinct, with only 40 individuals surviving in the wild.
Thanks to strong anti-poaching and other conservation efforts in Russia with support from many organisations, including the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), the Siberian tiger population started to recover and has remained stable at around 450 individuals throughout the last ten years or so.

Malayan Tiger
Panthera tigris jacksoni
The number of Malayan tigers in the wild is estimated at 500. It was only identified as being a separate subspecies to the Indochinese tiger as recent as 2004.
While similar to the Indochinese tiger, the Malayan tiger is smaller and is more close in size to the Sumatran tiger. It is found only in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula, in the southern tip of Thailand and Malaysia.

South China Tiger
Panthera tigris amoyensis
The South China tiger has not been sighted in the wild for more than 25 years. Many scientists believe the subspecies is more or less extinct as although a few individual tigers may remain, hope for their survival is slim. This is due to their not being sufficient habitat or prey to support their survival.
According to the Save China's tigers website, there are around 60 South China Tigers in Chinese zoos and the hope is that by establishing new habitats and reintroducing young tigers, they can reestablish a wild population.
This video shows South China tigers that are being bred in South Africa as part of this programme.

This video, recorded by Big Cat Rescue, tells us that while White Tigers are adorable to look at, they are the result of callous inbreeding by humans. White tigers are extremely rare in the wild, because they would not normally survive. That beautiful gold, red and brown stripy coat evolved as camouflage, to help tiger catch its prey.
White tigers do not have the samee camouflage - it would be like a snowman ploughing through the jungle and would be easily spotted by the animals it depends on for its survival.

- I admire tigers. Everything about them is the source of my motivation. Each time I look in the eye of a tiger, I feel inspired. I wish I could be living in a place where I can see them in wild life. They mean Power to me. They give me the strength to move on everytime I feel lost. Thanks for the lens.
