In a small den at Tiger Island, Samara is giving birth...
Tiger Island Zoo is raising tigers in order to save the gene pool of these endangered big cats. Sign a Petition to Save Tigers and learn tiger facts.
And the Awesome Pawsome are born! Taj, Sultan, Rama and Sita come into the world, and Taj is the hoped-for white tiger! Sita, the only female, will become a vital link in the breeding program, but for now, she must survive the first year of life at Tiger Island. (My favorite is Taj, being so rare!) The cubs snuggle against Samara. The zookeepers notice Rama and Sita, as they have an even rarer trait than Taj: light stripes! The brown-orange stripes and butterscotch color make them look like large house cats!
The Awesome Pawsome live at Tiger Island at Dreamworld in Queensland, Australia. They intrigue me because they are such extraordinary tigers. Four tigers, one white, two light-striped, and one normal. The website of Dreamworld is here.

The Awesome Pawsome TV Show
The Story of Bengal Tiger Cubs

The Awesome Pawsome is a documentary special that chronicles the first year of four Bengal tiger cubs -- Sita, Rama, Taj and Sultan. Born at Tiger Island at Dreamworld, on Australia's Gold Coast and raised in captivity to help preserve the species, the program captures the unpredictable moments of their infancy, from birth to feeding, living with their handlers, getting their first bath and even meeting dogs, children and learning to be adult tigers.
Taj
Facts and interactables about Taj: A White Bengal Tiger
As a cub, Taj was playful and a good friend of his dad, Mohan. He loved Tiger Cake, and stole his siblings' cake as well! He was small and cuddly, too. (Please excuse the purrs from both Taj's, tigers can't actually purr. They can roar and chuff.)
As an adult, Taj is a proud tiger, being the first white tiger born in Australia. He loves his dad and all of his human/tiger family at Tiger Island.

Sultan
Facts and interactables about Sultan the Normal Colored Bengal Tiger
As a cub, Sultan was energetic and liked pouncing. He was the only normal-colored tiger in the Awesome Pawsome.
As an adult, Sultan lost a lot of fame, being brother to three extraordinary tigers and not being extraordinary himself. He still loves his family and especially his siblings. He is also a talkative cat, and won't leave his feelings unheard!

Sita
Facts and interactables about Sita the Light-Striped Bengal Tiger

As a cub, Sita was always treasured. She loved pouncing on Taj and Rama, and loves her family, especially her brothers and father Mohan.

As an adult, she still loves pouncing, though usually not on her brothers. She has more etiquette than when she was a cub, but still basically stays the same. See below for information about her new mate and possible cubs.

Taj's Teaching
Taj teaches about Bengal Tigers, with help from family.
Taj: Hi, my name's Taj! I'm a white tiger, the rarest tiger in the world!Rama: Actually, Taj, you're second to rarest. Light-striped tigers like Sita and I are rarer, right dad?
Mohan: Actually, you're both wrong, Rama. The real rarest is the golden tiger. Though they've got to be rare, and very rare. Taj, did you know that worldwide there are only about 200 white tigers including us?
Taj: Really? I didn't know that. How could we get helped, dad?
Mohan: Actually, humans are helping. They try breeding programs for white tigers, and hope for white tiger cubs from that, like you from Sama and I. Usually, though, a white tiger, light-striped tiger, or golden tiger, wouldn't survive well in it's habitat. It needs the normal coloring for disguise. Luckily, you three little terrors and I live at a zoo, and the zookeepers get us what we need.
Sita: Hey, we're not terrors, right Taj? Right Rama?
Rama and Taj: Yeah, Sita, we're...uh...not, as, uh, educated and proper as you...
{Sita rages at her brothers}
{Rama and Taj scream}
{Sita purrs at her control over them}

Mohan, Rama, Taj and Sultan: Sita, tigers don't purr.
Sita: They don't? I thought they were felines.
Taj: They are, but tigers can only roar and chuff due to the shape of their vocal cords.
Mohan: Good job, Taj, you're telling a lot of facts!
Taj: I'm learning a lot, too!
Sultan: I feel awkward being an only-normal-colored cub. Do you feel weird about your unique coloring being one not as rare as the others, Taj?
Taj: Yeah, it is kinda weird. Bet Rama and Sita don't feel that way. Anyway, back to facts, did you know that most tigers sleep up to 18 hours a day? Also, tigers and jaguars are the only two large cats which like the water.
Mohan: You really are a smart cat!
{Mohan smiles proudly}
{Taj smiles back}
Taj: Tigers are good at jumping, too, and--
Sultan: Well, I can, but you can't so it doesn't count as all tigers.
{Sultan sticks his tongue out at Taj}
Taj: Dad, can tigers jump?
Mohan: Well, lets go watch a tiger and see if it does jump.
{They watch a tiger in real action. It doesn't even hop}

Mohan: That explains your question?
Taj: Oops, sorry Sultan, I guess you're right. But if I'm getting corrected off all the cool stuff, what's the big woop-dee-doo on tigers?
Mohan: Tigers, first of all, are an endangered species. Also, they have stripes acting like a human's fingerprint. No two patterns are the same, though they look similar. Furthermore, at full running speed tigers reach up to 60 kilometers per hour!
Taj: Wow! This should being Mohan's Teaching, you know a lot!
Mohan: Thanks, Taj.
Sita: What about Sumatran Tigers? Does anyone know about them?
Mohan: Share your knowledge, Sita.
Sita: Well, first of all, Sumatran Tigers are the smallest of all tigers. Also, Sumatran Tigers have the darkest colored coat of all tigers.
Furthermore, Sumatran Tigers have broader, black stripes that are more closely spaced. Additionally, though not about Sumatran Tigers, tigers have a white spot on the back of both ears, which looks like eyes. This tricks predators into thinking the tiger is looking at them. This is why they are called 'eye spots'.
Taj: Woah, Sita! You're a genius! How'd you learn all this?
Sita (puffing out her chest): I pay attention to the zookeepers' conversations.
Taj (bored tone): And a big woop-dee-doo for you.
{Sita rages at Taj}
Taj (wide-eyed and hiding behind Mohan): Ah! Daddy, I'm scared!
{Mohan nips Sita}
Mohan: Don't scare your brother, Sita.

Mohan and Rakhan
Tigers of Dreamworld's Tiger Island

Queensland is also the home of none other than Dreamworld's Tiger Island, a permanent display where tigers interact with humans every day. Tiger Island opened in June 1995 with six Bengal tigers: Samara, Jai, Mohan, Rakhan Bakkar and Kyla. Due to relocations and deaths, only two of the original six tigers remain (Mohan and Rakhan).
Kato and Sita

You can have Kato and Sita to snuggle and cuddle with in your own home. Look for some cubs for Kato and Sita above when you read about Sita as a cub.
Kato and Sita
More Tigers will join the Awesome Pawsome from Tiger Island

Two Bengal tiger cubs were brought to Dreamworld in 2001 from Bullen's Wildlife Sanctuary in southern New South Wales. One of these has died and the remaining cub, Kato is now 3 years old and will reach maturity towards the end of 2005. Kato's ancestry is different to that of the park's other cats, 'the awesome pawsome' who were born there in 1998 (Sita, Rama, Taj and Sultan). It is expected that a breeding program between Kato and Sita will begin in late 2005 or 2006.
Tiger Island Zoo

The enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo was only 12 1/2 feet tall when a tiger escaped and killed a young man there. That height can be traced to an age-old belief in India, where tigers are common, that a person can ride safely through tiger country atop an elephant, which stands 11 to 13 feet tall. The standard for zoos now is 18 feet with the top 2 feet tapered in towards the tigers.

Buy several tiger families and you can have an entire community of tigers to add to your own little Tiger Island Zoo!

A PETITION TO SAVE INDIA'S NATIONAL ANIMAL
TIGER, tiger,
burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?......
Who out of us has read these lines by William Blake and not felt awe for Indias National animal, the mighty TIGER. But do we want but only a fleeting memory of a once magnificent animal?
The Tigers future is in danger, and it is up to us to save our wildlife and our forests. In return we will be insuring our own future which is intrinsically linked with that of the Tiger.
According to the latest survey by Wildlife Institute of India , India's leading wildlife institute, the tiger numbers have reached an all time low .Nothing substantial is done by the centre and state governments to stop poaching, deforestation and encroachment into tiger territory, which are the main causes of decline in tiger numbers. This is due to the highest level of irresponsible behavior, greed, corruption and poor management by the government.
India needs its Tigers and we demand urgent action in the national interest and will of the common man. You and I are the Tiger's last hope. India's history has seen its share of signatures in blood promising their lives for the honour of our country. We only ask for support to uphold the very existence of our national animal and to ensure its role not only in history but also in our future.
SAVE THE TIGER, SAVE YOURSELF.!!
So, just take a moment and conjure up an image of the great Tiger and hold it in your hearts and your minds because there are a few things in life which are as breathtaking.
Sincerely,
RADHIKA BHAGAT

Write Your Own Tiger Story
IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit

Most educators now use the Writing Process to teach children how to write. Children learn to write by focusing on the process of creating writing rather than the end product. When writing, students utilize the stages of the writing process which include prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Prewriting is the planning and idea-gathering stage. Drafting refers to time spent composing a rough draft. Revising is the process of improving the draft. Students reread their work and share it with a partner or small group; they then make changes in the writing based on the feedback from their peers. Editing is the process of correcting mechanical errors. Publishing is done when the work is in final form and ready to be shared. (Information gathered from North Central Regional Educational Laboratory)
Once the children have taken a story through these stages they are ready for publishing and "IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit" makes publishing simple. To publish the child simply uses the markers and special book pages included in the kit or the book can be made entirely online using Internet drawing and writing tools. The completed story pages are mailed in the postage paid envelope provided. In just a few short weeks you'll receive back a professionally typeset, hardbound book even includes a title, dedication page and "About the Author" biography page to give it a truly professional touch, ready to display in your classroom library and sturdy enough for the school library. At the end of the year parents will want it to proudly display on their coffee tables.
IlluStory is a multi-award winning activity kit and perennial best seller because few products, if any, can build as much self esteem and excitement for reading and writing. The quality of the finished book is a tremendous value and rewards any level of effort. Extra books can be ordered and are the ultimate gift for family and friends, especially since each can be separately dedicated to the recipient. Ages 5 and up.
Tigers are Dangerous Wild Animals

A 350-pound Siberian tiger that mauled an experienced San Francisco Zoo keeper so badly she could lose her arm had no history of violence, prompting an investigation into what led to the vicious attack.
This is the same tiger that escaped its cage attacked three men, killing one a year later. Police shot and killed the tiger.
Big Cats are wild animals, they are not pets. The fact is, tigers, lions, and other big cats are dangerous, volatile, and genetically hard-wired to kill.

Yahoo Answers:
Awesome Pawsome?
Where can I find the video of the Awesome Pawsome u know from animal planet, about the four Tiger cubs?
You'll have to wait for it to come back on TV and then record it. It is not on DVD, and nowhere else on the web. Animal Planet protects their videos quite closely, so you'll be hard pressed to find one unless they release it on DVD. It's been 7 years since it's been made though so I have a feeling you're out of luck.

Zoo officials said Thursday that Binjai (BIHN'-jy) had been euthanized a day earlier after lab results indicated the animal may have had a blood-based cancer. The zoo says the male tiger's condition had been deteriorating rapidly since Saturday and officials decided it was best to put him down.
Binjai was 18, one of the oldest Sumatran tigers in the United States.
A 17-year-old female named Aneh (A'-nuh) was euthanized at the Akron Zoo Nov. 13 because of chronic kidney disease. The zoo has only one remaining Sumatran tiger, a male named Roho.

- Hi Trudy - I really love this lens and gave it five stars. Very comprehensive - you've covered everything about tigers. Also, thanks much for your gracious comments on my lens: http://www.squidoo.com/TheZoo. Best of luck and keep up good fight!

- Have just adopted "Sultan". I also adopted a tiger from the World Wildlife Fund site as well, and became a member. I'm really looking forward to the material and also to the repeats of the "Awesome Pawsome" show.
Wish they would do a followup.

- P.S. I'm not affiliated with the Little Zoo personally, altho they are one of the beneficiaries in my will. I say "my Zoo" because it is the only major Zoo in this county.

- Hi! I did look at the Squidoo lens info but have not decided yet. I don't want to start something I might not have time to keep up with. I will keep it in mind tho. Yes, they have several tigers at the Little Zoo, and some new cubs just born recently.
Click on the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo site.

- "The Little Zoo That Could" sounds like a special place. Have you thought about making a Squidoo lens about your zoo? I would love to hear more about your zoo and it's expansion. Joining Squidoo is free. Just go to the top of this page and click. Do you have tigers at "The Little Zoo That Could"?

- Hi! Fortunately our local zoo is very well-run. If you saw "The Little Zoo That Could" on AP, that's us.
They are moving to a huge area soon which will give the animals lots of space and freedom. The ideal situation is for them to be in the wild but it's just not possible anymore.

- It is wonderful that zoos are helping to save the gene pool of these beautiful animals but humans must be aware of the nature of animals by providing good habitats for them to live in where the tigers are happy and not bothered by people.

- I signed the petition to save the tigers. Hopefully I am going to do a "tiger walk" at my local zoo next month. I missed bottle feeding some cubs earlier.
It hurts me to see tigers getting a bad rep because of this SF Zoo mauling. Tigers are wild but they don't usually leap from an enclosure!

- I see a lot of people are looking for the video of "Awesome Pawsome". I believe Animal Planet is rerunning the show again on Jan.30 for those of us who were dumb enough to miss all the earlier runs.
Happy New year!

- I just adopted "Sita" from Tiger Island. I love that "awesome pawsome" program..have seen it countless times. So sad that fans in USA can't buy merchandise from the online store. I hope this changes in 2008!

- Chloe, Thank you for your comment. For your protection please do not put your phone number online. Awesome Pawsome is a very interesting program. Caring for your dogs will help you understand other animals when you are older and able to have more pets of your own.

- I believe all tigers are one of the most beautiful of God's creation and should be preserved at all costs, even if it's at a zoo. In fact I believe all wild cats and canines such as wolves which are also in danger of extinction should be bred and protected so we may see and learn from them.
