A Little History If You Please....

TikiBar Origins

Earnest Gant aka Don "the Beachcomber" started the Tiki Bar trend in Hollywood in the 1950's with colorful Polynesian decor and drinks called "Rum Rhapsodies".

TikiDrinksLater, a restauranteur latched onto the idea and created a series of establishments called "Trader Vics" in this same Polynesian Theme with their orgination of a now famous libation - the Mai Tai. These restaurants and parties were a hit with soldiers remembering their WWII South Pacific experiences. After a lull from 1970 to the 90's, the TikiTheme is once again all the rage for partygoers world wide.

Tips for a Smashing Bashing Tiki Party Soiree Success

So What makes for a delightful party anyway?:
There are so many considerations when you're hosting a gathering. Here are several suggestions to help create your polynesian atmosphere, vibrant mood and a good time had by all.

- Setting the Mood with a Unique Atmosphere: Decorations and lighting are always key elements in creating the silky ambiance you're seeking for any soiree. While you're not able to whisk your guests off to Tahiti, you can surround them with exotic otherwordly decor. Add some posters, tealights, stringing flowered garlands into your lightstrings will add even greater flair. You could place thatching along your deck rails, hang leis on chairs or pegs for your partiers to discover. If you have the opportunity, hang colorpattern fabric to create a delightful tenting with some wires or ropes. The more structure and lights you can add, the more people will feel like they've been transported to paradise.

- Inviting Lively People: Know a storyteller, some musicians, a bellydancer, a magician, a bartender? Think about all the different personalities you know and then mix up your various groups of friends and encourage them to add some spice to your event!

TastingParadise- Bottomless Tasty Food & Delicious Drinks: Sending out on a Beer run can be a partykiller. Plan ahead for extra supplies of everything. This doesn't have to mean extra expense - ask some of your closest pals if they'd like to host your event with you and share costs. Adding "Potluck" to your theme always works too.

- Keeping The Right Music Playing: You may want to develop a playlist in advance, keeping your music uninterrupted for hours. Varying your music styles can modify the partyingmoods as your evening progresses. Shifting to livelier tunes after 10pm will get those happy bodies dancing!

Ultimate Limbo- Giving your Guests Fun Activities: This is an essential "GreatParty" element that is often overlooked. For your TikiTheme, you may want to have some GrassSkirts and coconut bras placed just anywhere for the lively ones in your group to wear. Set up a badminton, tossgame, horseshoes or volleyball area. Limbo or hula dancing lessons will fit right in.

- Creating Different Zones: Remember that some of your partygoers will be seeking quiet places for conversation or romance. Gotta have a large open space in case the dancing fever hits. Change these settings by varying the intensity of your lights or placing a portable fireplace and extra seating a little more removed from the crowd.

How did you know to send me to a Hawaiian lens? We have been to Hawaii (and absolutely loved it) and we have had Hawaiian themed parties -- both adult and child versions. Your lens is beautiful! Thanks for all of your help! Brenda
