Recycled Art and Pique Assiette Mosaic Tile

The beauty of the mosaic tiled path is surrounding yourself with discarded shards and the bits & pieces of our lives.

The art of mosaic tile has been around for centuries! It's wonderful that the world has finally caught up with recycling and re-purposing things for the good of the planet and our creative souls.

Gluing stuff to other stuff is always a amazing adventure. The best part about recycled art, Shard Art and Pique Assiette Mosaic Tile...

THERE ARE NO RULES! It's random! It's quirky! It's a blast!

Pique Assiette Mosaic Tile art is very addictive for a number of reasons.
1. You can glue stuff onto most stuff!
2. The art of mosaic tile is inexpensive, if you stay within the random art of Pique Assiette mosaic tile.
3. Thrift stores become your second home.
4. If you don't like what you've created you can pick it off and start over...as long as you haven't grouted it.
5. You'll find out that you are creative.

The downside of the recycled art of mosaic tile.
1. You can't stay out of the thrift stores.
2. All of the future projects that you have envisioned are stashed everywhere and it's starting to clog up the good energy in your basement, garage, cupboards, closets or anywhere else you hide your stuff.
3. Most tell me it's grouting.

Best thing of all...anyone can do mosaic tile art. If you need some support getting started I would highly suggest taking a class. There are many mosaic tile classes and mosaic tile workshops all around the world. Check them out and catch Tile Gypsy Fever!

A good friend sent this to me sometime ago and it is a true reflection of what mosaic tile art is and does. When a certain artist who makes mirrors, tables & bowls decorated with images, trinkets, tile fragments & often hidden words in the designs was asked what her artwork meant to her she said: "I think I like it because it tells so much about my story." Or anyone's life, for that matter...
Life smashes things to bits and you put it back together & make something beautiful with the pieces."

Mosaic tile is the ultimate recycled craft project. Go ahead break something!

Pique Assiette Mosaic Tile

Shards of this and that.

Shard art is a traditional mosaic tile technique that became popular during the Victorian Era. People of that time began turning their broken heirloom china into treasured decorative pieces for their homes. These pieces were often called "Putty Pots" because the bits and pieces were embedded into putty on various shapes and vessels. Shard Art also took on the name "Memory Ware" because the shards often carried sentimental value or family history.
The contemporary name of Pique Assiette came into view in 1938 when Raymond Eduard Isidore began gluing found objects of glass shards and bits of pottery to his home and gardens near Paris, France. The townspeople referred to him aspicassiette, translated meaning is "stealer of plates." Isidore devoted the rest of his life to gluing shards, eventually covering every square inch of his home, furniture and gardens.
The old term of picassiette slowly evolved into the contemporary name for shard art: pique assiette. Tile Gypsies have been gluing stuff to other stuff for centuries! Today, you can view public examples of pique assiette all around the world.

Popular and most famous
Parque Guell - Antonio Gaudí's Barcelona
Watts Towers - Simon Rodia Los Angeles
Raymond Isidore's - Chartres, France

It seems that many famous tile artists didn't study this whimsical art they just started gluing. Many went on to learn different techniques from others but most stayed within their own style.

If at first you don't succeed, just keep gluing!

Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration, or of cultural and spiritual significance as in a cathedral. Small pieces, normally roughly cubic, of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae, (diminutive tessellae), are used to create a pattern or picture.

My co-author, Katharine Kaye McMillan, and I LOVE glass tile--especially mosaic glass tile! It is totally captivating used to create fine art pieces or architectural interiors and exteriors! See our books (Glass Tile Inspirations for Kitchens & Baths and our newest, Designing & Living With Glass Tile, Fall 2009...both by Schiffer Pub.) for gorgeous photos that will inspire and motivate! /s/ Patricia Hart McMillan

The whole process of mosaics, I think, has become a lost art. I do it myself, and really enjoy the outcome of putting all the pieces together. Sometimes I steer off my original design idea and it becomes something even more beautiful. Great lens! Keep gluing.
