Tiles are plentiful and their uses varied
The Many Kinds of Tiles
Roofing tiles were probably the earliest invented for use in houses. These tiles were used to keep out the rain and heat while warding off the cold during the winter season. Roof tiles are basically those that cover the roof and prevent the elements from entering the house.
Floor tiles have long been used on both kitchen and bathroom floors and also sometimes on walls since they are not easily permeable by water. Ceiling tiles are different in structure from the others. This is because they need to be lighter so that they do not fall off due to gravity.
Decorative tiles are made specifically to decorate and influence an area of the home or office building. These are not the common flat pieces that we usually see but are sometimes full of decorative effects that make an area of the home or office more interesting.
Many countries having their own styles of tiles, my personal favorite being Moroccan Tiles; these are still hand made and take many hours to produce enough tiles just to cover one wall. They are also wood fired, meaning each batch is unique. I first came across the above site via another site about Moroccan Tiles; called Drabdavid! Another couple of resources are the Tiles Shop and Moroccan Mosaic Tiles.
I have located a new directory with listings for Moroccan Tiles.
