About Till The Clouds Roll By

The life of composer Jerome Kern is the focus of the MGM musical biopic. The movie begins with a review of Kern's Broadway musical Show Boat, and concludes with another look at that musical. In between those Show Boat bookends, the movie presents a fictionalized biography of Kern. The composer was initially involved in the making of Till the Clouds Roll By, but Kern died before production of the film was completed.

Like many musical biopics, the real entertainment presented by Till the Clouds Roll By lies in the the cavalcade of stars who appear in the film, as well as in the many musical numbers that these stars perform.

About the Producer

Arthur Freed, who produced Till the Clouds Roll By, was both a songwriter and an acclaimed producer of Hollywood musicals. Two of his films, An American in Paris and Gigi, received an Academy Award for Best Picture. His production credits also include musicals such as Singin' in the Rain, Easter Parade, Brigadoon, Kismet and Show Boat.

Guy Bolton, who wrote the story for Till the Clouds Roll By, earned Broadway credits for musicals such as Anything Goes and Girl Crazy, and film credits for Ziegfeld Follies.

The film credits of cinematographer George J. Folsey include films and musicals such as Meet Me in St. Louis, The Harvey Girls, Animal Crackers, and Cocoanuts.
