Tim Berners-Lee, Modest Father of the World Wide Web

Sir Timothy Berners-Lee is currently the founder and Director of the World Wide Web Consortium at MIT, but he is perhaps best known for inventing (along with Robert Cailliau) the World Wide Web (W3) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1989 to 1991.  As such, he can be credited with having created the first web server, client, pages, directory, browser and editor.  He is also the originator of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and URLs (Uniform Resource Locators); all of which we take for granted when we surf the Web each day.  This lens focuses on Mr. Berners-Lee and his many contributions to technology.

A Biography of Tim Berners-Lee from Wikipedia

Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, OM, KBE, FRS, FREng, FRSA (London, 8 June 1955), is an English computer scientist and MIT professor credited with inventing the World Wide Web, making the first proposal for it in March 1989. On 25 December 1990, with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student staff at CERN, he implemented the first successful communication between an HTTP client and server via the Internet. In 2007, he was ranked Joint First, alongside Albert Hofmann, in The Telegraph's list of 100 greatest living geniuses."Top 100 living geniuses" The Daily Telegraph October 27, 2008 Berner...

A Few Quotes Which Have Been Attributed to Tim Berners-Lee

  • "Anyone who has lost track of time when using a computer knows the propensity to dream, the urge to make dreams come true and the tendency to miss lunch."
  • "The original thing I wanted to do was [to] make [the Web] a collaborative medium, a place where we can all meet and read and write. Collaborative things are exciting, and the fact [that] people are doing wikis and blogs shows [that] they're [embracing] its creative side."
  • ". . . to allow users to actually use the web even though it contains junk as well as gems - the technology must allow powerful filtering tools which, combining opinions and information about information from many sources, are completely under the control of the user."
  • "You affect the world by what you browse."
  • "I don't mind being referred to as the inventor of the World Wide Web. I like that image to be separate from private life."
