Burton's World - A Beautiful Nightmare

I have always loved the work of Tim Burton both his art work and all the movies he has been involved with and created. His work is hauntingly beautiful, dreamy and dark. He shows a tenderness to those that society has cast aside. He is an introverted, eccentric, an unassuming person and brilliant all at the same time.I have been a fan since Pee Wee and Beetle Juice and have followed his work since then.
Timothy William Burton was born August 25, 1958 in Burbank, California. His career got underway at the most famous animation studio in Hollywood, he landed his first directing gig because of a bootleg tape of a short film. he found his pleasure in painting, drawing, and movies. He loved monster movies: Godzilla, the Hammer horror films from Great Britain, the work of Ray Harryhausen. One of his heroes was actor Vincent Price.

After high school in 1976, Burton attended the California Institute of the Arts. Cal Arts had been founded by Disney as a "breeding ground" for new animators, though they did offer other courses of study. Burton entered the Disney animation program in his second year, thinking it would be a good way to make a living. In 1979, he was moved into the Disney animation ranks.

Burton did not enjoy being an animator, the work requires talented artists, but they cannot deviate from the structured manner of drawing the characters. Frame after Frame it bored him. The studio recognized that Burton's talent was not being utilized. They made him a conceptual artist, the people who design the characters that appear in the films...eventually Tim was set free to try some of his own projects, one of them being the poem and art for what became Nightmare Before Christmas.....and the beautiful nightmare continues

(I have a large amount of Nightmare Before Christmas collectibles and would love to meet other adults who own way too many toys :) )

Very nice write up. Tim Burton has a chat with Ray Harryhausen recorded on the
colorized DVD "Twenty Million Miles to Earth", and you can also (i think) find
at least some of it on Youtube. I have a lens on colorization where I go on
a bit about Harryhausen.
