Introduction to Time Management Problems Affecting Self-Employed People

Time management can be tricky for people who work for themselves at home, as without the structure of conventional office life, those who are self-employed can find themselves battling procrastination and avoidance. At the other extreme, those who work at home may find it difficult to stop work. When the office is 10 seconds away at all times, giving yourself permission to truly relax and not do 'just another 5 minutes' can also prove difficult to achieve.

Overcoming Procrastination and Maximizing Time Management

In order to better manage your time, and stop procrastinating, it is important to be realistic about the need to make actual changes. Being honest with yourself about the behaviors you are using to procrastinate is one way to begin to change the patterns you are stuck in.

As well as being honest about HOW you procrastinate, look also at WHY you procrastinate - are you a perfectionist and frightened of doing a task badly? Do you hate one part of your job and put it off endlessly? Are you overwhelmed by the amount that needs to be done and just don't know where to start? Be aware that the more you put off a particular part of your job, the more overwhelming and daunting it feels.

Sometimes, just forcing yourself to start is all that it takes. Don't tell yourself that you have to complete the last 6 years taxes, tell yourself that you just need to do the accounts for this week. Once you make a start, it already feels more manageable, and you will do last week's too, then the last month's, and so on.

Even a small amount of progress will make you feel less intimidated by the work that needs doing. You will realise that you are more than capable of accomplishing it, and once you start you will feel inspired and empowered to continue.

Good awakening call! Working from home is not the "natural" environment to get things done. Most people are used to work in offices and separate places outside their homes. And now with this new tendency to work from home, pretty much things changed. This brought a lot of challenges to the table and thanks for sharing your ideas for meeting those challenges into some extent.

    Just liked +1 your lens!

Thank you for your comment and your +1 :) You make a very good point, it's not a natural environment for us, and is happening more and more so we will need new techniques to manage it.
