Doctor Who - The Worlds Longest Running Sci-fi Show

As a young child brought up in 1960's England, one television show stands out most in my memory - Doctor Who! As A young child I would look forward to the next episode with a mixture of pleasure and fear. Much of the time watching hidden behind my dad's armchair for safety!

The program was first aired on the November 23rd 1963 and continued as a series until it was suspended in 1989. A one off episode was made in 1996 featuring Paul McCann as the Doctor. It reappeared on  26 March 2005 played by Christopher Eccleston. In 2006 David Tennant took over the role.

Who is Dr Who?

Dr Who is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He travels through time and space in his time machine called a TARDIS, which stands for 'Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space'. The TARDIS looks like a 1950's British Police Box (see picture). What is deceiving about the TARDIS is that from the outside it is small, but inside it is massive.

The Doctor travels through time and space putting right wrongs and defeating a number of different adversaries. The most famous, or should I say infamous, of which are the Darleks.

The Darleks

The Daleks are a race of mutants. They are a grotesque mutated organism integrated with a tank-like mechanical casing made of 'dalekenium'. These creatures are a pitiless race who are bent on universal conquest and domination. They are Dr Who's greatest enermy.

I can remember as a child being frightened by their cry of "EX-TER-MI-NATE!", which was made with a screech-like electronic voice. The darleks feature in many episodes of Dr Who.
