Advice On Buying Fine Wristwatches

From A Professional

Think carefully about what type of watch you want. If you live an active lifestyle then a gold dress watch may not be what you need, maybe a sports watch would be better for you. Do you require top notch accuracy?... then a quartz watch is going to serve you better than a mechanical one.

Always do your research, research a brand fully. Don't be afraid to go into shops or talk to dealers about your requirements. They are there to help and offer advice. If you contact me I will answer any queries you have, I like to talk to fellow enthusiasts.

Spend as much as you can afford. This will allow you to buy a watch in better condition and with more service history. Think of a watch like a car. If you are spending top money you want full service history and all the paperwork. Always try and get the box, if it does not come with the watch, source one afterwards, it will add value to you watch.

Always check the history for yourself, especially Rolex models. Many are poorly sourced, they may be stolen or made up from pieces of other Rolex watches.

Beware of fakes, only buy from recognised and respected dealers. If you need a Rolex check my link below and talk to dream watches. They are good friends of ours and will not steer you wrong.

Don't be afraid of vintage watches. Many people are worried by real mechanical movemnets breaking and by plastic crystals and the lack of water resistance. To put these fears to rest, old mechanical movements do need looking after but they were built to last. Plastic crystals are cheap and easy to replace or polish. To be honest I don't recommend putting any watch in water unless of course it is a divers watch. Even then however I recommend having it checked often to ensure the seals are still good.

Buy what you like. A more expensive watch does not equal a better watch. A Rolex is a show piece. it does not tell the time half as well as a watch you could buy at any market for £3. But it does have history, fine craftmanship and a presence on the wrist.

eBay is a great place to start looking and doing your research. Always try and buy from your own country. This avoids customs charges, dodgy fakes from the far east and lots of poorly restored junk from latin America. Always use PayPal !!!

Don't stop at Rolex, Omega watches are wonderful and so are Universal Geneve, Vacheron, Audemars and many others.

My Current Favourite Watches - The Top 10 !

The Fantastic Patek Phillipe 5036 Is Illustrated

1. Omega Constellation (CC) 1967 Day-Date 18K Solid Yellow Gold, Linen Dial, Leather Strap. Self Winding 25 Jewel Cal. 751 movement.

2. Rolex Submariner Date 16618, Solid 18K Yellow Gold. Blue Dial And Bezel Insert. 31 Jewel Automatic Movement. 300m Water Resistance.

3. OMEGA Seamaster Professional 300m,Stainless Steel Case & Bracelet, Blue Dial And Bezel, Quartz, The original Brosnan Bond watch. The automatic was only added in his second film. I was given one for my 18th Birthday and even now it is my everyday watch.

4. Longines 1945 Tank model, 14K Yellow Gold Case, Silver dial, Longines 17 Jewel Manual Winding Movement cal. 9LT. Leather Strap. A Classic dress watch, yet being 14K gold not 18K is robust enough for daily wear. I was lucky enough to be given one in Christmas 2005. I have since had it restored and it's graces my wrist when I need something understated.

5. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, 18K Yellow Gold Case And Bracelet, Champagne Dial, Roman Numerals, The usual Rolex 31 jewel auto movement.
Very flashy, very expensive. I don't wear mine that often. There is always a time for massive overstatement however.

6. Universal Geneve Tri-Compax. Stainless Steel case. The worlds first mass produced complicated watch. Moonphase, chronograph, rare in a steel case, a wonderful vintage classic.

7. Patek Phillipe 5036, Annual Calender, Solid 18K Yellow gold case and bracelet. Exhibition case back. This is the most wonderful new watch on the market today. It is however in excess of £23,000. It will hopefully be my next purchase... after I have paid for my wedding !

8. Universal Geneve Golden Shadow. Solid 18K gold, White Dial, A classic, elegant shape, wonderful micro-rotor movement, very thin case. The ultimate in understatement.

9. OMEGA Louis Brandt Complication, Very Small run back in 1984. Perpetual calender movement. Solid 18K Yellow gold case. Massively expensive. A real wonder to behold.

10. OMEGA Speedmaster Chronograph. "The Moon Watch" This watch with the OMEGA Cal. 861 movement is an all time icon of watchmaking. Just go and buy one !
