Buy your timeshares on Ebay

If you're familiar with the timeshare industry at all, you probably already realize that buying a timeshare from the developer is a fool's game. Depending on what timeshare program we're talking about, they immediately lose 50-75% of their resale value and their are some timeshares out there that resell at fire sale prices (Royal Holiday Club, anyone?)

The savvy timeshare buyer knows that Ebay is one of the best places to pick up a timeshare for the best price.  While there are still plenty of owners who have unrealistic expectations regarding the worth of their timeshare, there are plenty of sellers who understand how to price their auctions. They want to SELL.

This lens is a shopping guide to a selection of what is available on Ebay in the Timeshare category. I've created it because Ebay doesn't break out the different timeshare companies into sub-categories and it is just much easier to shop if you can go straight to all the WorldMark offers or the Fairfield offers, or Marriott, etc.

I've organized each category of timeshare alphabetically and I will be adding more specific searches for different companies over the next several days.

Happy Shopping!

Some Tips Before You Bid on a Timeshare

It's all about Due Diligence

* Beware of Closing Costs. Many of the timeshares on Ebay have very low opening bids or Buy It Now prices and sometimes it is because the seller is making it up on the backend, i.e. the closing costs for hiring a title company. From my research on Ebay, the majority of timeshare auctions are handled by real estate companies and most of them have a relationship with a particular Title Company. This is fine, but do shop around. Expenses vary between Title companies.

* If you are buying a timeshare strictly as a trader, generally the $1 timeshare auctions are a waste of time. Every single one that I have every looked at has been in some horrible low season week in a part of the country that either no one wants to visit or the week is for an essentially dead season in that location.

* Try and do your due diligence on a timeshare before the auction ends. Contact the seller and ask him or her for the contract number and the name of the owner and then call up the resort and verify the details listed in the auction -- are maintenance fees up to date? is the number of points listed in the auction the same number of points as in the membership? is the week correct? If it is a "Right to Use" vacation club membership, is the expiration year correct? Etc.
